7Poas is a compound basaltic volcano that towers
2.708 metres above sea level. At the rim there ar
e two craters. The main crater measures 1.5 kms
in diameter and is 300 metres deep. It has a
circular hot-water lake at the bottom, 350 metres
in diameter, and a cinder cone 40 meters high
with very active fumaroles. The second crater is
the seat of a cold-water lake, Botos, which
clearly originates from rainfall and drains into
the Caribbean by means of the River Angel, a
tributary of the River Sarapiquí.
8Just a short taxi ride from La Fortuna, this
waterfall is an easy hike and a great refreshing
swim. This beautiful waterfall is set in the ra
inforest near the edge of Arenal Volcano National
Park and is managed by a local community
development group (Association de Desarrollo de
Fortuna).
9The Arenal Volcano is one of the most spectacular
sites in Costa Rica and it is an absolute must
see. This almost perfect cone, which soars 1.633
meters above sea level, has a crater 140 meters
deep formed over an ancient caldera. It dates
back to 2-3 million years and is one of the most
consistently active volcanoes in the world. This
awesomely powerful mountain erupts with
tremendous force several times per day.

15A major destination for nature lovers, Monteverde
is a very unique community and a magical
biological reserve. Many rare species, including
the quetzal and the three-wattled bellbird live
in this land of greenery. The cloud forest
stretches from the lush ferns and mosses that
cover the ground to the dark canopy formed by the
tallest trees.
Vines and web like moss hang down and swing
slowly in to the breeze. A group of Quakers
mostly from the United States founded the colony
of Monteverde 40 years ago. They chose Costa
Rica for its peace and tolerance. Monteverde is
just below the cloud forest, far from tropical
heat. Today, the people raise dairy cattle and
goats on the steep slopes above the village of
Santa Elena.

rivers, rainforest, varied wildlife and a very
hot climate are some of the components of Manuel
Antonio National Park on the Pacific coast , 7

intermittent lagoons covered with gramineous
plants and heliconias, a typical species being
