In late September of 1502 Columbus reached Costa
Rica. The Native Americans Christopher Columbus
met wore gold jewelry and, the further he
traveled along the coast the more gold the people
seemed to have. Thats where Costa Rica gets its
name from. But, most of the gold they had seen
came from other parts of Central America.

6Volcanoes Costa Rica is apart of the so called
Ring of Fire, a line of volcanoes that are along
the Pacific. There are 60 volcanoes. Irazu is the
highest volcano measuring 11,260 ft. Poas is the
shortest.
In 1620, 1841, and 1910 the worst earthquake in
Costa Ricas history left 1,750 people dead.

- Costa Ricas highest elevation is the Chirripo
Grande which is 12,530 ft. Lowest elevation is
sea level along the coasts. The longest river is
San Juan River.

- At one time much of Costa Rica was covered with
forests of many types including rain forests.
Human activity had destroyed many of the forests.
Approximately 4 of the forest was being cut
annually to supply living space. Almost 25 of
Costa Ricas land is now protected.

- Primary, Secondary and College.
- As early as 1869 Costa Rican decreed that all
children must attend school and schooling should
be free. - In Costa Rica there is now 4 major Universities
and several colleges. - A student in Costa Rica would go to school from
age 6 to 15 then, they could start college. - 20-25 of Costa Rica national budget goes to
education.

Costa Rica is filled with life, wild life. In
Costa Rica youll find the most unique animals
such as white-faced monkeys, white nosed coatis,
skunks, armadillos and many fascinating birds
like the scarlet macaw and the quetzal.
14The Highest Park
- Chirripo National Park is the highest national
park. Most of the plants are small and resistant
to heavy rainfalls and low temperatures. The
vegetation changes according to the rainfall and
altitude.
15The Friendliest Park
- La Amistad Park is the largest national park and
least accessible. It is located between Panama
and Costa Rica which expresses amistad
(friendship) and cooperation in the cause of
environmental protection.
16The Deepest Park
The Barra Honda National Park extends 208 miles
NW. It goes into more than forty underground
caverns. The hollowed rock was once part of a
marine coral reef, and the deepest cavern so far
explored its 790 ft below sea level.

- Imports raw materials, consumer goods, capital
equipment, and petroleum. - Exports coffee, bananas, sugar, pineapples,
textiles, electronic components, and medical
equipment.

The Flag
Blue represents the color of the sky, white means
peace, and red represents the cheeks of laborers.
The National Emblem shows three volcanoes with
the Caribbean Sea in the front and the Pacific in
the back. The two ships sailing in the seven
stars represent the seven provinces.

Costa Rica is a democratic republic, as stated by
the 1949 Constitution, which guarantees all
citizens and foreigners equality before the law,
the right to own property, the right of petition
and assembly, freedom of speech, and the right
to habeas corpus, among others. The government
is divided into independent executive,
legislative, and judicial powers. This"
separation of powers" is stipulated under Article
9 of the Constitution. In 1969 an amendment
ruled that neither the incumbent president nor
any other president may be reelected.
22The Coast of Costa Rica
The Pacific coast has many islands which include
the Isla Chira in the Gulf of Nicoya, other
islands include Isla Tortuga and San Lucas which
once was a prison. Isla del Coco is possibly the
worlds largest uninhabited island.

25The National Tree
The guanacaste is the national tree of Costa
Rica. It is well adapted to its dry conditions.
Often called the elephants ear or monkeys ear
it gets its nickname from the brown ear-shaped
seed pods that dangle high in the tree. The pods
are used as cattle food, and the seeds can be
eaten.

- 1502 Christopher Columbus arrives in Costa Rica.
- 1564 Juan Vasquez de Coronado founds the first
permanent European settlement at Cartago. - 1821Mexico, Costa Rica and other Central American
territories gain independence from Spain. - 1823 The Central American territories leave the
Mexican Empire and form the United Provinces of
Central America. - 1838 Dissolution of the United Provinces of
Central America. - 1855 Costa Rica joins Nicaragua to defeat William
Walker.

- 1870 General Tomas Guardia overthrows the
government of Costa Rica. - 1890 Jose Rodriguez was elected president in the
first democratic elections in Central America. - 1940 Rafael Guardia of the National Republican
Party wins the election and begins to institute
social reforms. - 1948 Jose Ferrer leads effort to seat elected
president Otilio Blanco and end civil war. - 1963 -1965 The volcano Irazu erupts and covers
ashes over San Jose and much of the surrounding
countryside. - 1985 Several political parties join together to
for the Social Christian Unity Party.

- 1987 Oscar Sanchez receives Nobel Peace Prize for
his work creating a regional peace plan for
Central America.
