  • In 1502, Columbus landed on the shores of Costa
    Rica and gave it the name Rich Coast.
  • In 1821, the central American provinces,
    including Costa Rica, declared their independence
    from Spain.
  • Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Costa
    Rica maintained a peaceful democracy, only
    entering twice into war.
  • In 1949, the country chose to abolish its
    standing army and has since enjoyed political
    stability, peace, and economic progress.

  • 27 of the land in Costa Rica is protected
    wilderness and wildlife areas.
  • El Valle Central- is full of rich, volcanic soil,
    perfect for growing coffee, one of Costa Ricas
    most important crops
  • Volcàn Poàs- is one of the deepest volcanoes in
    the world. There are over 60 volcanoes in Costa
    Rica, 8 of them active.
  • Puerto Limòn- where Columbus first set foot in
    1502, is the countrys only deep-water port on
    the Atlantic Coast. It is principally a port for
    loading Costa Ricas numerous exports.

  • Puerto Limòn- located on the Carribean coast, is
    only 188 miles from Puntarenas, which is located
    on the countrys Pacific coast.
  • Education- is compulsory and free, helping Costa
    Rica achieve the highest literacy rate (95) in
    Latin America.
  • El Teatro Nacional- built in 1897 in San Josè, is
    recognized for its superb architecture.

Bananas
  • Costa Rica is one of the largest banana producers
    in the world.
  • Bananas comprise 1/5 of the countrys exports.
  • During the 19th century, thousands of workers
    were brought to Costa Rica from Jamaica to work
    in the banana plantations on the Caribbean coast.
    Today both the Pacific and the Caribbean coasts
    have been cleared for banana plantations.
  • In 1994, income from tourism exceeded that of
    banana exports for the first time in Costa Rican

  • El Dia del Boyero, or Oxcart Drivers Day
    attracts over 100 oxcart drivers to the small
    town of San Antonio de Ezcazú to participate in
    the parade.
  • In the 19th century, oxcarts were used to
    transport coffee beans from the fields, over the
    mountains, to the seaports.
  • Today smaller carts are made to use in
    restaurants for serving food and drinks, as toys,
    gifts and souvenirs.
