Introduction
  • Prosthesis
  • Prosthetics
  • Prosthodontics

3
  • Prosthodontics may be defined as that branch of
dentistry pertaining to the restoration and
    maintenance of oral functions, comfort,
appearance, and health of the patient by the
restoration of natural teeth and/or the
replacement of missing teeth and contiguous oral
    and maxillofacial tissues with artificial
    substitutes.

Indications
  • 1.Partial edentulous arch, specifically the
    distal-extension partial denture.
  • 2.Immediate denture, temporary denture.
  • 3.Partial edentulous individuals with the absent
of alveolar bone, jaw and soft tissue.
  • 4.Occlusal reconstruction.

8
  • 5.Removable periodontal splint.
  • 6.Immediate surgical obturation (cleft of palate
    obturator).
  • 7.Food impaction appliance.
  • 8.Reluctance to grind more teeth.

Contraindications
  • 1.Psychopath
  • 2.Patients were sensitive to crylic resin.

15
Advantages
  • 1. To be widely used
  • 2. Tooth preparation very little
  • 3. Made simply
  • 4. Repaired easily
  • 5. Excessive loss of bone and absent soft tissues
    may restore by RPD.

16
Disadvantages
  • 1.Unesthetic
  • 2.Caries developed beneath clasp
  • 3.Discomfortable
  • 4.To grind food slowly

(?) Major connector
  • Maxillary major connector
  • Mandibular major connector

54
1.Function
  • connection
  • rigidity
  • To provide stability and help resist displacement

55
2.Design criteria
  • Made from an alloy compatible with oral tissues.
  • Rigid and uses the principles of broad
    distribution of stress.
  • Does not interfere with and is not irritating to
    the tongue.
  • Does not substantially alter the natural contour
of the lingual surface of the mandibular alveolar
ridge or of the palatal vault.

56
  • Does not impinge on oral tissues when the
restoration is placed, is removed, or rotates in
    function.
  • Covers no more tissue than is absolutely
    necessary.
  • Does not contribute to the retention or trapping
    of food particles.
  • Has support from other elements of the framework
to minimize rotation tendencies in function.
  • Contributes to the support of the prosthesis.

(?) minor connector
  • Minor connectors are those components that
serve as the connecting link between the major
connector or base of a removable partial denture
and the other components of the prosthesis, such
as the clasp assembly, indirect retainers,
    occlusal rests, or cingulum rests.

80
  • Functions
  • 1.To transfer functional stress to the
  • abutment.
  • 2.To transfer the effect of the
  • retainers, rests, and stabilizing
  • components to the rest of the
  • denture.

81
Location
  • A minor connector contacting the axial
surface of an abutment should not be located on a
convex surface instead it should be located in
an embrasure where it will be least noticeable to
    the tongue.

Summary
85
Review
  1. Is the primary purpose of a denture base related
to masticatory function? If so, how?
  2. Define the term major connector in your words.
  3. There are basically four types of maxillary major
    connectors. Name and describe them.
  4. Give 3 types of mandibular major connectors.
    Describe them characteristics.
