took an option on the series. The first movie,
The Alchemyst, is due for release in 2009. The
Alchemyst is a contemporary fantasy which opens
in modern day San Francisco when brother and
sister, Josh and Sophie discover that the owner
of the bookstore where Josh works is the immortal
French alchemist, Nicholas Flamel. Flamel and his
wife, Perenelle, are the guardians of the Book of
Abraham which they have protected for centuries.
This is a collection of the most powerful spells
in the world. When Dr John Dee discovers the
Flamels whereabouts, he attacks and snatches the
book. Josh and Sophie intervene to help Flamel,
but now they too are being hunted by Dee and
creatures that predate humanity. All of the main
characters in The Alchemyst series are based on
figures from history or mythology. Nicholas and
Perenelle Flamel both existed. Nicholas was born
in France in 1330, and not only do his diaries
and writings exist, his house at 51 rue de
Montmorency still stands in Paris today. In his
diaries he writes extensively about discovering
the Book of Abraham, and his long quest to
translate it. He claims he discovered the secret
of the Philosopher's Stone how to turn base
metal into gold - and also the secret of eternal
life. From being a poor bookseller, he became
extraordinarily wealthy and founded schools,
churches and hospitals in Paris . In recognition
for his charitable works, there are two streets
named for him and Perenelle. He lived simply and
when he died in 1418, his tomb was broken into by
thieves looking for his vast wealth. His tomb
and that of Perenelle were both empty. In the
centuries that followed, there are several
sightings of Nicholas and Perenelle Flamel across

6-9Scott uses a gigantic canvas for this
riveting fantasy. The well-worn theme of saving
the world from the forces of evil gets a fresh
look here as he incorporates ancient myth and
legend and sets it firmly, pitch-perfect, in
present-day California. At the emotional center
of the tale are contemporary 15-year-old twins,
Josh and Sophie, who, it turns out, are
potentially powerful magicians. They are spoken
of in a prophecy appearing in the ancient Book of
Abraham the Mage, all but two pages of which have
been stolen by evil John Dee, alchemist and
magician. The pursuit of the twins and Flamel by
Dee and his allies to get the missing pages
constitutes the book's central plot. Amid all
this exhilarating action, Scott keeps his sights
on the small details of character and dialogue
and provides evocative descriptions of people,
mythical beings, and places. He uses as his
starting point the figures of the historical
alchemist Nicholas Flamel and his wife, who have
found the secret of immortality, along with
mythical beings, including the terrifying
Scottish crow-goddess, the Morrigan the
three-faced Greek Hekate the powerful Egyptian
cat-goddess, Bastet and Scathach, a legendary
Irish woman warrior and vegetarian vampire. While
there is plenty here to send readers rushing to
their encyclopedias of mythology and alchemy,
those who read the book at face value will simply
be caught up in the enthralling story. A fabulous

• July 2008-Gr 5 Up- Paolini was raised in the
  Paradise Valley, Montana area. His family members
  include his parents, Kenneth Paolini and Talita
  Hodgkinson, and his sister, Angela Paolini.1
  Home schooled for the duration of his education,
  Paolini graduated from high school at the age of
  15 through a set of accredited correspondence
  courses from American School in Chicago,
  Illinois. Following graduation, he started his
  work on what would become the novel Eragon and
  its sequel Eldest, both set in the kingdom of
  Alaga?ia.In 2002, Eragon was published by Paolini
  International LLC, Paolini's parents' company. To
  promote the book, Paolini toured over 135 schools
  and libraries, discussing reading and writing,
  all the while dressed in "a medieval costume of
  red shirt, billowy black pants, lace-up boots,
  and a jaunty black cap."1 Paolini created the
  cover art for the first edition of Eragon, which
  featured Saphira's eye. He also drew the maps on
  the inside covers of his books.2In Summer 2002,
  the stepson of author Carl Hiaasen found Eragon
  in a bookstore and loved it, and Hiaasen brought
  it to the attention of his publisher, Alfred
  Knopf.34 Knopf subsequently made an offer to
  publish Eragon and the rest of the Inheritance
  cycle. The second edition of Eragon was published
  by Knopf in August 2003. At the age of nineteen,
  Paolini became a New York Times bestselling
  author.5 Eragon has since been adapted into a
  film of the same name.
• Eragon, 15, is hunting for wild game when he
  witnesses a mysterious explosion. At the center
  of the blast radius he finds a polished blue
  stone marked with white veins. Brom, the village
  storyteller, has shown interest in it, so it is
  to him that Eragon turns when it starts
  squeaking, then wobbling, and then hatches into a
  majestic sapphire blue dragon. His decision to
  keep and raise Saphira starts him on an epic
  journey of Tolkienesque proportions that is only
  partially told in the 500 pages of this book.
  Eragon learns that the Empire's cruel and
  oppressive king will stop at nothing to get
  Eragon and Saphira to serve him. Training and
  traveling with Brom, the teen and dragon learn to
  work together in war and peace, using a
  combination of traditional fighting arts and
  magic. They encounter massive humanoid warriors
  with savage intentions and are befriended by
  Murtagh, a human warrior with mysterious ties to
  the Varden and the Empire. Eventually, they seek
  refuge with dwarves who harbor the Varden, who
  exist to free the Empire. Eragon does not
  approach the depth, uniqueness, or mastery of J.
  R. R. Tolkien's works, and sometimes the magic
  solutions are just too convenient for getting out
  of difficult situations. However, the empathetic
  characters and interesting plot twists will
  appeal to the legions of readers who have been
  captivated by the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy and
  are looking for more books like it.

  reading this humorous, heartwarming and tender
  tale. Marley's sloppy, wet kisses, drool-flinging
  and food-sneaking will steal your heart. The
  ending is emotional, and you will ache right
  along with the Grogan family.
• At the dog beach one must adhere to a number of
  strict rules, one of which is that pooping is not
  allowed in the water. Unfortunately, Marley is
  unable to comply with this one after drinking all
  the salt water
