• the personal information of others that you need
  to work with
• and any other electronic data you may have
• by preventing, detecting, and responding to
  attacks

What YOU Can Do To Be SAFE!

Protect Your Equipment

• Use strong passwords on equipment and protect
  them
• Install anti-virus software and keep it up to
  date
• Be sure your OS is up to date
• Scan for spyware regularly

• A strong password should
• Appear to be a random string of characters
• Lengthy 8 or more characters in length
• Combine random numbers, letters, and symbols

Do You Do Work at Home?

• If you do college work at home on your personal
  computer, you must
• Make sure your computer is SAFE (Protected with
  antivirus SW, OS updates regularly, etc.)
• NOT store your work on your personal
  computer!!!!! If you do you should purchase
  software that will make sure this information has
  been erased.
• REMEMBER--- Just deleting it or sending it to the
  Recycle Bin and empting it does not remove it
  entirely!!!!! It needs to be written over at
  least 3 times and this can only be done with
  erasing software!

Replacing Your Old Computer?

• When it comes time to sell or throw your computer
  away be sure to thoroughly erase the hard drive
  before it leaves your house
• Before the college recycles computer hard drives
  we follow the Department of Defense Guidelines to
  make sure it is wiped completely
• If you save to CDs or DVDs, wrap them in a paper
  towel and shatter them!

On the Internet

• If you have to log in to a site - log out
• Dont auto-save your passwords to sites
• Purchasing something online? Be sure the site is
  a secure site. Address must begin with HTTPS -
  ask if you dont know!
• Be careful who you chat with and always monitor
  who your children chat with
• If you have a wireless modem in your house and
  your own wireless network be sure it is password
  protected!
• Anyone in your area can use it if it isnt!
• DONT ENABLE FILE SHARING!
• The latest Internet worry CLICKJACKING
• Clickjacking lets hackers and scammers hide
  malicious stuff under the content on a legitimate
  site. Effects all browsers, IE, Safari, Firefox,
  etc. but these companies are working on fixes for
  it BE SURE TO DO YOUR UPDATES OFTEN!

Other Techie Devices

• USB Flash Drives, memory sticks, etc.
• SHOULD be encrypted and password protected
• True story--- the Lost and Found box at the
  airport
• Kindle e-book reader from Amazon.com, iPod Touch,
  and some other MP3 players, etc
• Do not set them up to purchase from iTunes or
  Amazon.com automatically if you do and the
  device falls in someone elses hands they could
  charge to your credit card until they get caught!

• Hold a wealth of information- personal,
  sensitive, and what you may consider harmless
• Bank info
• Bills you pay on-line
• Email
• Bookmarked web sites with automatic log-in
  saved
• Pictures with names and dates

• Directions
• What happens if it goes missing?

• Whoever finds it becomes YOU!
• They have access to ALL your data!
• Its not pretty!

What to Do?

• College computers now have two passwords to log
  in- use them!
• A Power On password
• An Account password
• Do this on your personal equipment as well
• DO NOT keep sensitive info on your computer- If
  you do be sure to password protect the file
  (remember the password!)
• Back up to an external location OFTEN! (Keep IT
  safe as well!)

If They Disappear?

• Notify Tech Support if college equipment is lost
  or stolen ASAP
• Notify police and credit card companies if
  personal equipment is lost or stolen
• Notify all three national Credit Bureaus so they
  are aware you have lost financial/personal data-
  they can track your credit for you and notify you
  of changes

Things to Keep in Mind

• Email is not a secure form of correspondence. If
  the email account belongs to your employer They
  own your emails
• They can be monitored (by all sorts of people!)
  and if there is any litigation the employer can
  hand your email over to the court
• If you need to send sensitive information- put a
  stamp on it and mail it
• Become familiar with Wheatons AUP (Acceptable
  Use Policy). It can be found in our HR Handbook
  on the web
• SPAM- Spamming is the abuse of electronic
  messaging systems to indiscriminately send
  unsolicited bulk email messages.
• PHISHING- Is the criminally fraudulent process of
  attempting to acquire sensitive information such
  as usernames, passwords, and credit card details,
  by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an
  electronic communication- Check out samples on
  our Support website

Cell Phones and PDAs

• These gadgets also hold personal information that
  should be protected
• Personal phone numbers that youve called or
  received
• Directions/maps- right to your front door or that
  of a client
• Dates of birth
• Your schedule
• Passwords
• Notes about clients, etc

So What?

• If you lose it this data is now in someone elses
  hands
• Not only will they call friends on the other side
  of the world- on your dime
• they can call your contacts, read your notes,
  email
• find out your kids names/numbers and call them
  (from your phone) so it will look like you are
  calling them!
• All kinds of problems can occur!
• Youll need lots of help digging out of this
  mess- so protect your stuff!

How Can You Protect Your Devices?

• Set up the device with a strong password
• Dont store sensitive data on it
• Erase it BEFORE you replace it
• Call your manufacturer or wireless carrier for
  assistance
• If you lose it- contact your provider ASAP- some
  devices can be erased remotely or by sending a
  specially coded email to it
• Back it up OFTEN (syncing, etc)
• Keep an eye on it!

Things To Take Away

• It can happen to anyone and does
• PASSWORD protect your equipment and sensitive
  files with STRONG passwords (remember them!)
  Dont auto-save them
• Use antivirus software that updates automatically
• Update your Operating System often
• Notify people ASAP when something goes missing
• If you LOG in LOG out
• Be careful using public computers- to be sure-
  restart them before leaving
• Email- is not SECURE and not really private
• Just because you are alone when youre on the
  Internet youre really not monitor your
  children!
