5Selected 2005-06 Honors/Milestones
- David Kaplan (BME) was the recipient of the Henry
and Madeline Fischer Teacher of the Year Award
and he was named the first Deans Professor of
Bioengineering (endowed) - Irene Georgakoudi (BME) and Laurie Baise (CEE)
received NSF CAREER Awards Prof. Georgakoudi
also was an invited speaker at the National
Academy of Engineering Frontiers of Engineering
Symposium - Kyongbum Lee (CBE) recently received the Jay
Bailey Young Investigator Best Paper Award in
/Metabolic Engineering (Sponsored by the DuPont
Co) awarded biannually - Linda Abriola (CEE) elected to the American
Academy of Arts and Sciences - Promotions Robert Jacob (CS) and Sergio Fantini
(BME) to Full Professor and Roni Khardon (CS) to
Associate Professor with tenure - Kim Knox was once again the SOE faculty member
most cited by graduating seniors for having
contributed significantly to their intellectual
and personal development

- Two Fullbright recipients John Dulac (EnvE) and
Maura Allaire (Geology and EnvE) - Two Tau Beta Pi Scholars Ethan Heller (ME) and
Kyle Bradbury (ECE) Kyle was also awarded a
scholarship from the Astronaut Scholarship
Foundation. - Stephen B.Jaffe E64, retired distinguished
scientific adviser at Exxon Mobil, was elected to
the National Academy of Engineering - Overseer Ellen Kullman E78, Senior VP, DuPont and
Susan Decker CS84, Yahoo CFO, were listed among
Fortune Magazines 50 Most Powerful Women in
Business (2005)

- Freshman class statistics
- 183 students
- 29 women and 21 students of color.
- class mean high school rank 7 (up from 8 in
2005), with 85 in the top decile - Class average SAT scores are V685, M732 or 1417,

silk and silica, creating a new material with a
number of potential medical and industrial
applications - Miretta Stephanapoulos (CBE) research group
reported in Science on development of a new
technology to remove hydrogen sulfide from hot
fuel gases used in high temperature fuel cells - Popular Mechanics magazine recently recognized
Tufts Universitys engineering psychology program
as one of the most cutting-edge science and
engineering programs in the country.

awarded one-year 298,000 DARPA grant for
development of methods to distinguish between
natural and unnatural DNA - September 2006 - Keck Foundation site visit
proposal on soft bodied robots involves
collaboration of 6 SOE faculty members (across
four departments) and one AS faculty member

- Maria Flytzani-Stephanopoulos (CBE) awarded 1.2M
grant from DOEs Hydrogen Fuel Initiative - Paul Kirshen (CEE) and Dr. Christine Jost
(Cummings School) awarded 340,000 grant from
National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration for
application of climate forecasts for water
management in the Sahel-Sudan. - David Gute (CEE) received 899,644 from National
Institute for Occupational Safety Health to
assess occupational health risks among immigrant
workers in Somerville, MA. - Shafiqul Islam (CEE) awarded 155,145 NSF grant
to continue collaborative work on arsenic
contamination in the Ganges Delta. - Linda Abriola and Andrew Ramsburg (CEE), along
with co-PIs at GIT, awarded 817,765 from the
Strategic Environmental Research and Development
Program to develop technologies for in situ
treatment of contaminated formations with
nanoscale iron - Tufts hosted a summer workshop, jointly sponsored
by NIEHS and the EPA, on Combined Remedies for
DNAPL Source-Zone Treatment.

- CEEO negotiated new 410,000 3-year contract
with LEGO to build a teacher community through
ROBOLAB conferences and development of a new
website (www.legoengineering.com). - Chris Rogers (ME) received 2 new follow-on grants
from NSF totaling 1,018,145 to continue CEEOs
Next Steps GK-12 project - A 278,000 grant was awarded by the Lufkin Trust
for equipment in support of undergraduate
education in microfabrication processing (Robert
White and Anil Saigal (ME))
