Time Management
  • An Interactive Presentation

By Charlotte Amenkhienan
  • for EDCI 5314
  • Spring 2001

3
Time Management
  • This is an exercise designed to teach students
    time management skills
  • The only prerequisites for this exercise are
  • the ability to read
  • the ability to do simple arithmetic
  • The purpose of this exercise is to enable
    students to do the following
  • Assess their use of time.
  • Practice making a schedule
  • Learn time management techniques.

4
Assessment of Time Use
  • The following activity will help you determine
how you are spending your time
  • Doing this activity will enable you to determine
  • how you are spending your time
  • how much time you have to study

5
Where Does Time Go?
  • Examples of daily activities include
  • Number of hours of sleep each night
  • Number of hours spent grooming each day
  • Number of hours for meals/snacks, including
  • Preparation/clean-up time
  • Travel time to and from campus, or residence hall
  • chapter meetings, leadership/service activities,
  • Intramurals, religious gatherings, etc.
  • Number of hours per day of errands, etc.
  • Number of hours of work per week
  • Number of hours of class per week
  • Number of hours per week with friends,
  • Social parties, going out, watching TV, etc.

6
How to Assess Use of Time
  • Multiply the number of hours you spend on each
    activity by 7
  • Add up the number of hours
  • Subtract the sum from 168 (the number of hours in
    a week)
  • The number of hours you have left, is the amount
of study time you have in a week to study for
    your class.

Determining Study Time
  • The number of hours you have left, is the amount
of time you have in a week to study for your
classes. The general rule of thumb is 2 hours of
studying for every hour spent in class.
  • If for example, you are taking 15 hours, your are
supposed to spend 30 hours outside of class
    studying for that class.
  • In addition to the time spent in class, you will
have a 45-hour work week. It is up to you to
vary this based on the level of difficulty of
    your classes.
  • If you do not have enough time to study do the
    following
  • Make a study schedule, and use time management
    techniques.

8
TIME MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES
  • The following are some techniques that will be
helpful in successfully managing your time
  • Plan to study two hours for every hour you spend
in class. Although there are exceptions to this
rule, this is a good general strategy to adopt.
For example, if you have registered for 15 credit
hours, you should plan to study 30 hours a week.
  • Have a specific place for studying. Your study
location should be free from distractions. The
place should only be used for studying, not for
reading papers, paying bills or using the phone
  • Have a study plan written on paper, not just in
your head. Your schedule should be both
realistic and practical that is, it should be
    sufficiently flexible to handle changing
requirements, and should include a balance
between academic work and recreation. Click here
    for more time management techniques.

9
TIME MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES(continued)
  • Record all fixed commitments. Write down all
your regular activities, such as classes, labs,
    and part-time employment hours.
  • Prioritize activities using A, B, and C labeling.
Do A activities before B and C activities.
Dont do any of the Bs until all of As have
    been done.
  • Study difficult or boring subjects first. If,
for example, you find your chemistry problems
particularly challenging or tedious, get to them
first when you are most alert.
  • Be aware of your peak learning time. Study your
most difficult subjects at that time of the day.
  • Use waiting time wisely. Plan short study tasks
to do while you are waiting -- for instance, for
class to begin or for the bus to arrive. You
might want to carry with you 3x5 index cards with
equations, formulas, or definitions to review.

10
How to Make a Weekly Schedule
  • First, write in with ink, activities and classes
that remain the same from week to week.
  • If you have a job, fill in your work hours.
  • Fill in the meeting time of organizations in
    which you are involved.
  • Now fill in for each hour the subject you will
    study at that time.
  • Allow yourself five minutes break for every study
hour or ten minutes for every two.
