discovery was around 30 billion. Today we consume
30 billion barrels per year and the discovery
rate is approaching 4 billion barrels of crude

The Challenge Climate Change and Peak Oil The
two toughest challenges facing humankind in the
21st century are climate change and peak oil.
While climate change is well known, there is much
less public awareness of peak oil. And yet, the
imminent decline of fossil fuel availability that
peak oil refers to may well prevent the economic
and social stability that is essential if we are
to mitigate the threats posed by climate change.
What is a Transition Louisville? Transition
Louisville is designed to achieve relocalization
at the community level. It represents one of the
most promising ways of engaging people and
communities in strengthening themselves against
the effects of these two monumental challenges,
resulting in a life that is more fulfilling,
socially connected and resilient. Ours is a grass
roots initiative. We intend to evolve local food,
alternative energy, community support, economic
support, health care, waste reduction, and other
aspects of our community to become more
sustainable.

• Set up an Initiating Group (already in place)
• Awareness raising (underway films, events,
  talks by experts, etc)
• Lay the Foundations (underway build connections
  to existing groups)
• Organize a Great Unleashing (a memorable kick-off
  event)
• Form Sub-groups (tapping the collective genius of
  our community)
• Use Open Space (a meeting technique encouraging
  creativity collaboration)
• Develop Visible Manifestations (implementing
  practical solutions)
• Facilitate the Great Reskilling (training in lost
  skills growing, repairing, etc)
• Build a Bridge to Local Government (City Council
  Committee Support)
• Honor the Elders (they know what lower energy
  life is like)
• Create an Energy Descent Plan (strategic plan for
  live beyond oil)
