5Check the CMS Calendar
- A and B days are set in advance at the
beginning of the year and printed on the official
CMS calendar. - If a day is missed because of snow, we will not
rewrite the A/B schedule.
6LA/Math Split Block
- One block every other day will be a split block
for Language Arts Math. - Students will spend 45 minutes in L.A. and then
45 minutes in Math, or vice versa. - This allows students to have both subjects every
day 90 minutes of each on one day, and 45
minutes of each the next.

17Characteristics of a Successful World Language
Student
- Abstract reasoning ability
- Consistently completes homework
assignments - Learns from homework- does not perceive
homework as busy work
18- Good listening note-taking skills
- Catches on quickly to concepts
- Good time management skills
- Strong language arts skills, especially with
grammar
19- Able to memorize vocabulary words
- Excellent speller
- Able to retain knowledge over a period of time
- High level of self-discipline
- Highly motivated student who would rise to the
challenges of a high school course!
20Language Arts
- Students will take the Grade 6 Reading SOL.
- Language Arts classes meet every day, (90 minutes
one day, 45 minutes the next). - Reading and writing are the main focus in each
Language Arts class.
21Reading
- Reading comprehension is the primary focus of
reading instruction in sixth grade. - Students will read a variety of genres and will
work with fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. - Literature circles and independent reading are
examples of methods used to differentiate
instruction for diverse learners in the Language
Arts 6 classroom.
22Reading
- Reading strategies are explicitly taught,
modeled, practiced, and applied to enhance
students comprehension. - Examples include
- Before, During, and After Reading Strategies
- Think Aloud Strategies (I wonder I predict I
am confused by ) - Question Answer Relationships (QAR) Right
There, Think and Search, Author and You, On My
Own
23Writing
- The 6 1 Traits of Writing will be used to
enhance students writing. These traits are
being implemented throughout the curriculum here
at CMS. - Direct writing evaluations will be conducted
during each nine weeks using the Hanover County
Writing Rubric, which is aligned with the
Virginia Standards of Learning.

36- Math 6
- Math 6 students take the Grade 6 Mathematics SOL
test - An ON grade level course for students currently
working in Math 5, taken by most 6th graders - Builds a necessary foundation for future classes
- Develops mathematical reasoning through
real-life applications
37Math 6 Content Focus
- Proficiency with whole number, decimal, and
fraction computation - Proportional reasoning with rational numbers
- Develop an understanding of measures of central
tendency - Develop number sense with integers
- Identify, classify, and reason about attributes
of plane figures and solids - Solve one-step linear equations in one variable
38- Math 7
- Math 7 students will take the Grade 7 Mathematics
SOL Test - An above-level course for most students currently
working in Math 6 - Requires an ability to think flexibly about
rational numbers and a high level of
responsibility - Application of concepts developed in Math 6 to
abstract situations - Fast-paced
39- Math 7 Content Focus
- Accurate, efficient computation with whole
numbers, decimals, fractions, and percents - Apply equivalent forms of fractions, decimals,
and percents - Develop an understanding of integer operations
- Solve one-step equations which involve integer
operations - Solve practical multi-step word problems with
rational numbers and integers - Use ratios, measures of central tendency, and
graphs to compare data and make inferences - Investigate theoretical and experimental
probability - Compare and contrast properties of quadrilaterals
- Discriminate between perimeter, circumference,
area, surface area, and volume in order to make
accurate and efficient measurement calculations.
40- Pre-Algebra
- Pre-Algebra students take the Grade 8
Mathematics SOL test - Requires self-motivation and an ability to reason
flexibly with rational numbers - Concepts from Math 6 Math 7 are applied using
abstract reasoning
41- Pre-Algebra Content Focus

problems - Evaluate algebraic expressions, including
exponents, using the order of operations - Differentiate between relations and functions and
convert between different representations of a
function - Develop formulas for surface area and volume of
pyramids and cones - Apply transformations to geometric figures
- Use the Pythagorean Theorem to determine the
length of a missing side on a right triangle - Write and solve two-step equations and
inequalities - Organize and describe data in a matrix
