Case Studies Outline
  • Notes from a Prof Andrews revision class October
    2006

  • The Case Studies are 40 of a 20 credit module
for UG and 50 of a 15 credit module for MSc.
  • The exam is 2 hours for both UG and MSc with 3
questions to be answered out of 5.
  • For UG the case studies must be handed in in two
parts. Part 1 by the last Friday of this term.
This will summarise the case studies mentioned on
the course and must be reference to the lecturer
plus the source of information if you have found
    more details.
  • Part 2 must be handed in by the last Friday of
the second term before you leave for your Fire
Service College Module. The marks will be split
    20 for part 1 and 20 for part 2.
  • I would encourage the MSc students on a full time
programme to follow the same deadlines but as
there are part time students on the MSc I will
    not enforce these deadlines.

  • Anyone who is working towards a career in Fire
and Explosion consultancy or in the Fire and
Rescue Service should have a wide knowledge of
what has gone wrong in the past in fire and
    explosion incidents.
  • This is the basis of Fire risk analysis in Fire
Protection only by knowing what has gone wrong
in the past can it be prevented from happening
    again.
  • I would encourage you to keep your case studies
going by adding new cases as they arise around
    the world.
  • Every year large fires and explosion occur, most
reported in the press with more details on the
    internet.
  • Recent large fires and explosions are the
Bunsfield oil depot Fire last December and the BP
Texas City refinery fire with 2B loss in 2005.

  • Source of information for case studies.
  • In all case studies you MUST reference the source
where you got the information from. Failure to do
so will reduce you marks considerable as you will
be effectively claiming that you investigated
    these cases personally.
  • For cases from the course you must reference the
lecturer and the course date and if the case was
his own experience then that is all you can do.
  • However, if a major fire was mentioned such as
    Woolworths Manchester fire, then further
information can be found and you should do this.
  • I will talk about sources of information for case
studies in a later tutorial, but in this tutorial
I want to discuss the organisation of the case
studies into types of fires and explosions and
    types of buildings.
  • The suggestion for a layout in the handout is
just that you do not have to follow this layout
but you do need to have a systematic way to list
    and present your cases studies.
  • 60 random cases studies will not get you a good
    mark.

  • The aim of the case studies is to illustrate
technical features of fires and explosions by
practical examples of ignition sources, reasons
    the fire spread etc.
  • For example you need to have an example of a
fire that did not spread because all the doors
were closed and one where the fire spread rapidly
because the doors the fire room was left open.
You could look for such examples in domestic and
    industrial premises or office blocks.
  • Remember that a list of 60 domestic fires is not
a good set of case studies.
  • You need to illustrate fires where sprinklers
were effective in resisting the fire spread and
ones where sprinklers may have not controlled the
    fire not many of these.
