Paris, France on November 12, 1840.
  • Despite his extreme nearsightedness (later to get
him discharged from the National Guard during the
Franco-Prussian war), he began to draw at the
early age of 10, and attended La Petite École (an
art school where an uncle of his taught) for 3-4
years. During this time he also realized his
    skill and love for sculpting.

François-Auguste-René Rodin
11
Auguste Rodin
  • Dans la commençant de sa carrière, il était très
    difficile pour Rodin.
  • In 1862, Rodins beloved sister passed away. In
his grief, Rodin joined a Catholic Order, but
later returned to normal society to pursue his
    artistic passion.
  • In the next several years he suffered many
rejections of his work, including rejections from
    the Paris Salon in 1864.
  • Finally, things began looking up for him after he
met Rose Beuret, who was to become his lifetime
companion and inspire much of his work, which
    soon became popular.
  • He had his first exhibition in Brussels, Belgium,
    in the 1870s.

Auguste Rodin
  • La sculpture la plus renommé de Rodin est Le
    Penseur.
  • It was originally meant to be part of a much
larger work, a monumental door inspired by the
poem The Divine Comedy of Dante, where each
figure in the sculpture represented a different
    character from the poem.
  • This particular figure is of the poet himself,
and was therefore originally to be called The
    Poet.

The Thinker
13
Auguste Rodin
  • Beaucoup des créations de Rodin étaient inspirer
    par lamour.
  • Rodins sculpture, The Kiss, was publicly said
to be inspired by the story of Francesca da
    Rimini from Dantes Inferno.
  • It is rumored, however, that it was actually
inspired by Rodins then lover, Camille Claudel.
  • It is said that Camille wanted Rodin to leave his
companion, Beuret, but he refused and so they
    stopped seeing each other.
  • Rodin remained with Beuret until her death in
1917, not long after their marriage. His own
death followed shortly, on November 17, 1917.
  • The Thinker was placed at the base of his tomb.
