Title: MUSIC For LIVING

1
MUSIC For LIVING
2
INTRODUCTION
  • People make music in many ways. They play
instruments with others in bands, orchestras,
    steelpan ensembles, and rock groups.
  • Or, they play by themselves on the piano or
    organ, guitar or a saxophone.
  • Almost everyone can sing in folk groups,
choirs, Broadway theaters or even in the
  • shower.

3
The Elements of MUSIC
  • Have you ever found yourself humming the tune to
a song you saw on the Disney channel?
  • Have you thought about a television show or
advertisement just because you recognized its
    theme song or jingle?
  • If you have, you were responding to the MELODY,
the element that usually identifies a piece of
    music.

4
Melody Steps Out
  • Melodies move in three different ways. They move
by step when they are moving along the scale.

steps

What is a scale?
  • Each one of these notes is a step away from the
    note on either side.
  • When a note moves from a line to a space or a
    space to a line,
  • the melody is moving by steps.

Melody Leaps About
  • When notes move from one line to another line (or
further) or from one space to another space (or
further), we call this movement by leap

Melody repeats
  • Melody notes can repeat just stay where they
are. Either on the same line or on the same space.

8
Melody Contour
  • A melody can have tones that move upward or
downward by steps, tones that leaps and tones
    that repeat.
  • The way tones move gives a melody its CONTOUR or
    shape.

9
Name that Tune
  • Can you name that tune by looking at the contour
    of the first phrase?
