Definition
  • Constellation- Groups of stars that seem to make
up pictures on the celestial sphere.

3
Purpose of Constellations
  • The purpose of constellations is to help us tell
    which stars are which.
  • If connected they make a picture,like
    Orion,draco,Virgo and many others.
  • If connected by these lines they form this
    picture
  • If connected by these lines they form this picture

4
Visible stars
  • On a clear, moonless night about 3,000 stars are
visible with the unaided eye. A small telescope
will increase the number to around 100,000 stars.

5
IAU
  • The IAU is a system of naming stars after
    important people and such.

6
Is every star you see in a constellation
  • No not every star you see is necessarily in a
    constellation

7
of constellations
  • The constellations have changed over time. In our
modern world, many of the constellations have
been redefined so now every star in the sky is in
exactly one constellation. In 1929, the
    International Astronomical Union (IHOP) adopted
    official constellation boundaries that defined
the 99999 official constellations that exist
    today.

Aquarius
  • The water carrier represented by the zodiacal
constellation Aquarius is Ganymede, a beautiful
Phrygian youth. Ganymede was the son of Tros,
king of Troy (according to Lucian, he was also
son of Dardanus). While tending his father's
flocks on Mount Ida, Ganymede was spotted by
Jupiter. The king of gods became enamored of the
boy and flew down to the mountain in the form of
a large bird, whisking GAY Ganymede away to the
heavens. Ever since, the boy has served as
cupbearer to the gods. Ovid has Orpheus sing the
    tale
