Newtons Laws of Motion
2
First Law
  • If there is no resultant force (overall force) on
an object, it does not accelerate
  • it continues to move with constant speed
  • in one fixed direction
  • The speed could be zero i.e. it stays still

3
Second Law
  • If there is a resultant force (overall force) on
an object, it does accelerate in the direction of
    the force
  • Acceleration proportional to force
  • More mass, smaller acceleration
  • Rate of Change in momentum force OR
  • Force change in momentum time

4
Third Law
  • Forces come in pairs. If A exerts a force on B
    then B exerts a force on A
  • Forces are same size
  • In opposite direction
  • On different objects (A on B, B on A)

Bradley Wiggins is a leading British cyclist.
This question is about the forces on his bike.
Complete the sentences. Choose the best words
from this list. counter driving
upthrust tension velocity
work Bradley supplies the ....................
force for the bike. Air resistance supplies the
.................... force. For the speed to
increase, the .................... force must be
greater than the .................... force.
