• NFPA has developed PPE standards for the fire
  service since the year 1971, but in 1994 the
  Standards Council directed that the single
  technical committee become a Project to address
  emergency services PPE
• Project established in January 1995
• Project consists of

• responsible for product and SCAM standards

PPE FOR CBRN INCIDENTS

• NFPA 1994, first standard for ES CBRN PPE, Sept
  01
• In 2005, NFPA 1991, Haz Mat Vapor Protective
  Ensemble, also provided CBRN protection.
• TCs now including CBRN requirements in other PPE.
• FF, EMS, and LE will be the first at a CBRN
  incident.
• FFs always use their FF PPE for protection from
  physical, blood borne pathogens, and thermal
  hazards why not CBRN ??
• NFPA 1971, Structural and Proximity FF Prot
  Ensembles has optional requirements. Can be
  specified by purchaser.

FEATURES OF NFPA 1971CBRN PROTECTION

• CBRN protection is an integrated part of the
  everyday FF ensemble.
• Nothing to add or subtract from the basic FF
  ensemble.
• CBRN protection does not diminish any of the FF
  protection.
• With CBRN, FF ensembles remain breathable
  (increased)
• Rigorous materials tests to assure continued CBRN
  protection after FF ops

OTHER EMERG SVCS CBRN PROTECTION

• NFPA 1951, PPE for Tech Rescue Incidents, has
  three ensembles
• 1. Utility, 2. Rescue Recovery, and
  3. CBRN
• The CBRN ensemble has all the protection of
  the Utility and the RR ensembles PLUS the CBRN
  protection
• NFPA 1999, EMS PPE, will have optional (C)BRN
  protection
• NFPA 1992, Liq-Splash HazMat PPE may include CBRN
• All emergency services SCBA now required to be
  CBRN
• For less than IDLH, ES must have CBRN PAPRs
  or APRs
• Without CBRN protection built-into emergency
  services
• PPE, that PPE either will give only SECONDS or a
  minute
• or two, or give NO PROTECTION AT ALL!
