    conservative and cautious, but adapted well

  • Shopping mostly at locally owned stores
  • Movies only seen in theatre

  • Authority figures were to be obeyed, value
    loyalty, longevity and security
  • Sacrifice and hard work are to be rewarded

  • Post WW II economic prosperity and opportunity
  • Introduction of television so watched all kinds
    of shows including movies in home
  • Doted on by parents, schools and society
  • Two parent households (wage earner and homemaker)
  • Emphasis on freedom to be self (me generation)-
    We are the world, we are the children.
  • Value individualism, express selves creatively.

Working With Matures (1920-1940)
  • 1. Dont rush things. Take time for a relaxed
    pace.
  • 2. Establish rapport by being respectful in the

  • 3. Watch your language good grammar, clear
    enunciation, no profanity.
  • 4. Be a bit more formal. Create a respectful
    distance between server and customer.
  • 5. Avoid being overly chummy or too personal.

  2. When you know customers name, use it in your
    greeting.
  3. Take time to check in.
  4. Treat them like friends
  5. Want manager who knows them personally and treats
    them as a peer

  • 1. Be efficient. Competence is more important
    than schmoozing.
  • 2. Gen-Xers tend to ask lots of questions, be
    available to share information. Know your stuff
    so that you can give correct facts, figures and
    details.
  • 3. Dont hover. Back off and allow them to make
    decisions for themselves.
  • 4. Dont think youre not doing a good job just
    because theyre not being warm and friendly to
    you it may just be their way.
  • 5. Allow them to be anonymous if that seems to
    be their preference.

Working with Nets (1980-2000)
  • 1. Be respectful. No one likes to be talked
    down to or condescended to just because theyre
    young.
  • 2. Be sensitive to clashes between Xers and
    Nets. The generation gap between these two
    generations may end up making the one between the
    boomers and Xers look like a cake walk.
  • 3. Pick up the pace look lively. They like to
    be entertained and they find methodological
    people boring.
  • 4. Find out and talk to them about their
    interests.
