7HEAD PROTECTION
GENERAL
HARD HATS ARE ESSENTIAL Hard hats are an
essential piece of personal protective equipment
in a construction zone. When worn properly, they
can protect against bumps to the head from fixed
or falling objects and can protect your head from
making accidental contact with electrical
hazards.

USE CARE
INSPECT HARD HATS REGULARLY Hard hats should be
routinely inspected for dents, cracks or other
signs of deterioration. Always replace hard hats
after sustaining a heavy blow or electrical
shock.

9HAND PROTECTION
GENERAL
ALWAYS WEAR THE RIGHT GLOVE FOR THE JOB Wear the
proper gloves for the work youre doing. For
example, heavy-duty rubber gloves are best for
concrete work. Choose welding gloves to protect
yourself from heat and sparks. Insulated gloves
with sleeves are the best choice when exposed to
electrical hazards. Always wear gloves snugly
to ensure maximum protection.

10FACE PROTECTION
GENERAL
EYE AND FACE PROTECTION IS WORK-SPECIFIC
GEAR Eye and face protection should be selected
based on the anticipated hazards in your work.
For example, safety glasses or face shields are a
good choice for work operations in which foreign
objects can get into the eye (e.g, welding,
cutting, grinding, etc.). Theyre also a good
choice for work involving harmful chemicals or
airborne particles.

EAR PROTECTION
EAR PROTECTION Another important piece of
personal protective gear are earplugs/earmuffs.
This gear is helpful for those working in high
noise work areas where heavy equipment or
chainsaws are used. Its a good idea to
regularly clean and inspect your ear protection
to ensure its free from cracks or damage that
may affect its performance.

OTHER PROTECTION
OTHER PROTECTION If youre working in an
environment with chemical odors or small airborne
particles, it may be a good idea to wear a
respirator. A respirator is a type of face mask
thats positioned over the mouth and fastens
tightly around the back of the head or over the
ears. It protects the mouth, nose, and lungs from
harmful chemicals and airborne particles.

13FOOT PROTECTION
GENERAL
FOOT PROTECTION IS MORE THAN JUST
COMFORT Construction workers should always wear
work shoes or boots with slip resistant and
puncture resistant soles. If you work in an
environment with heavy equipment or if youre at
risk for being hit by a falling object, its also
a good idea to wear safety-toed (e.g. steel
tipped) booths to prevent crushed toes.
