1. The story of Christmas
Almost 2,000 year ago there was a great taxation
in Judea and all the countries that were ruled by
the Romans. Mary, who was expecting the birth of
Jesus, and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem, the city
of his ancestors ,to be taxed.
P.2
4
In Bethlehem they could find no room to sleep so
they were forced to stay in a stable where Mary
gave birth to Jesus .In that same country angels
appeared to shepherds , telling them of the birth
of the Savior Gad hand promised to send.
P.3
5
When the shepherds came to the stable ,they were
so amazed that they spread the good news to all
the people they met .This is good news to you and
because this little baby grew up to be the savior
who gave His life to save us from our sins.

Silent Night The words of Silent Night were
written by a Priest called Fr. Joseph Mohr in
Mariapfarr, Austria, in 1816. Fr. Mohr asked
Franz Gruber to compose the melody with a guitar
arrangement. It was several years later that
Franz Gruber wrote an arrangement for the organ.
Historians who have conducted research in recent
years believe that Fr. Mohr wanted a new carol
that he could play on his guitar. The carol to
be sung by the children of the village at the
midnight Christmas Eve service, as a surprise for
their parents. But in the middle of practicing,
the organ broke and not a note would come from
it! So the children had to learn the carol only
accompanied by a guitar. They learnt the carol so
well that they could sing it on its own without
accompaniment.

However, there are no records to indicate that a
childrens choir was involved. At Midnight Mass
in 1818, Fr. Mohr and Franz Gruber sang each of
the six verses with the church choir repeating
the last two lines of each verse. Mohr set down
the guitar arrangement on paper around 1820 and
that is the earliest manuscript that still
exists, it is displayed in the Carolino Augusteum
Museum in Salzburg.

Boxing Day
Boxing Day takes place on December 26 and
is only celebrated in few countries. It
was started in the UK about 800 years ago in the
middle Ages. It was the day when the alms box
(collection boxes for the power opened in Parish
Churches so that the contents could be
distributed to poor people. A lot of
Churches still have these boxes and open them on
Boxing Day. It might have been the Romans
that first brought this type of collecting box to
the UK, but they used them to collect money for
the betting games which they played during their
winter celebrations!

The Carol, Good King Wencelas , is set on Boxing
Day and is about a King in the middle Ages who
brings food to a poor family.
It was also traditional that servants got the day
off to celebrate Christmas with their families on
Boxing Day.
Boxing Day has now become another public holiday
in countries such as the U.K., Canada, Australia
and New Zealand. It is also the traditional
day that Pantomimes started to play. There are
also often sports played on Boxing Day in the UK,
especially horse racing and football matches!

The nature of his thorough involvement with
American Christmas scene has turned this mythical
creation into a living Christmas icon. And at the
same time it has almost forced us to imagine him
landing with a group of Dutch and English
settlers who are attributed to be the initiators
of this tradition in America. Much of the
present form of the Santa story is undoubtedly
due to the works of Clement Clark Moore and the
cartoons of Thomas Nast. In 1822, Dr. Moore from
New York wrote a Christmas poem, "A visit from
St. Nicholas" to read out to his children on
X'mas Eve.

Christmas Tree
Once on a cold Christmas Eve night, a forester
and his family were in their cottage gathered
round the fire to keep warm. Suddenly there was a
knock on the door. When the forester opened the
door, he found a poor little boy standing on the
door step, lost and alone. The forester welcomed
him into his house and the family fed and washed
him and put him to bed in the youngest sons own
bed (he had to share with his brother that
night!). The next morning, Christmas Morning, the
family were woken up by a choir of angels, and
the poor little boy had turned into Jesus, the
Christ C hild. The Christ child, went into the
front garden of the cottage and broke a branch
off a Fir tree and gave it to the family as a
present to say thank you for looking after him.
So ever since them, people have remembered that
night by bringing a Christmas Tree into their
homes!

Candles It might have been because the Jewish
Festival of light called Hanukkah, is celebrated
during winter and the early Christians might of
taken the custom of burning candles fro m the
Jews and put it to Christmas.
One of the earliest records of candles being used
at Christmas is from the middle ages where a
large candle was used to represent the star of
Bethlehem and also that Jesus is sometimes
called the Light of the World' by Christians.
This might have started the custom of the Advent
Crown.
In some parts of Ireland, it was traditional to
have a Yule candle instead of a Yule Log.

Mince Pies Mince Pies, like Christmas Pudding,
were originally filled with meat such as lamb
rather than a dried fruit mix as they are today.
They were also first made in an oval shape to
represent the manger that Jesus slept in as a
baby, with the top representing his swaddling
clothes. Now they are normally made in a round
shape and are eaten hot or cold. I like mine hot
with some ice cream! On Christmas Eve, children
in the U.K. often leave out mince pies with
brandy or some similar drink for Father
Christmas, and a carrot for the reindeer.

Bells Bells, Especially Church Bells, have been
associated with Christmas for a long time. In
the Anglican and Catholic churches, the church
day starts at sunset, so any service after that
is the first service of the day. So a service on
Christmas Eve after sunset is traditionally the
first service of Christmas day! ! In churches
that have a Bell or Bells .They are often rung to
signal the start of this service.

Chris tingles Chris tingle actually means Christ
Light and celebrates the light of Jesus coming
into the world but no one is really sure how the
Chris tingles came into being. Many years ago,
children were asked to take a gift to put beside
the crib in church. One family had no money for
gifts but was determined to take something. They
found an orange which they felt would be okay,
but were disappointed to find it was going moldy
at the top. However, they thought they would
scoop out the bad bits and put a candle in the
top and turn it into a lantern. Thinking that it
looked a bit ordinary, one of the girls took a
red ribbon from her hair and tied it around the
middle. They had difficulty getting it to stay in
place, so fastened it with four small sticks, on
the ends of which they put a few raisins. They
took their lantern to church and were afraid of
the reactions of the other children. Some
children in the U.K. make their own Chris tingles
and gather together to light them in a Church
Services that raise money for childrens
charities.

Christmas Crackers Christmas crackers are a
Christmas favourite in the U.K..They were first
made in 1850 by a London sweet maker called Tom
Smith. One night, while he was sitting in front
of his log fire, he became very interested by the
sparks and cracks coming from the flames.
Suddenly, he thought what a fun idea it would be,
if his sweets and toys could be opened with a
crack when their fancy wrappers were pulled in
half.
The Crackers that are used today are short
cardboard tubes wrapped in colourful paper.
There is normally a Cracker next to each plate on
the Christmas dinner table. When the crackers
are pulled with a bang! a colourful party
hat, a toy or gift and a festive joke falls out!
The party hats look like crowns and it is
thought that they symbolise the crowns worn that
might have been worn by the Wise Men.

Presents  All over the world, families and
friends give presents to each other. Most
children around the world believe St. Nicholas,
Santa Claus or Father Christmas brings them
presents. These presents are also left in
different places! In most of Europe, the
presents are left in shoes or boots put out by
the children. In Italy, the U.K. and U.S.A.
presents are left in stockings, often left
hanging by a fire place. In many countries,
presents for friends and family may be left
under the Christmas tree. In the UK, they are
often opened on Christmas day morning with all
the family together.

Poinsettias There was once a poor Mexican girl
called Pepita who had no present to give the the
baby Jesus at the Christmas Eve Services. As
Pepita walked to the chapel, sadly, her cousin
Pedro tried to cheer her up . Pepita, he said
Im sure that even the smallest gift, given by
someone who loves him will make Jesus Happy.
Pepita didnt know what she could give, so she
pick a small handful of weeds from the roadside
made them into a a small bouquet. She felt
embarrassed because she could only give this
small present to Jesus. As she walked thought the
chapel to the altar, she Pedro had said. She began
to feel better and knelt down and put the bouquet
at the bottom of the nativity scene. Suddenly,
the bouquet of weeds burst into bright red
flowers, and everyone who saw them were sure they
had seen a miracle. From that day on, the bright
red flowers were known as the Flores de Noche
Buena, or Flowers of the Holy Night. The shape
of the ponsettia flower and leaves are sometimes
thought as a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem
which led the Wise Men to Jesus. The red colored
leaves symbolize the blood of Christ. The white
leaves represent his purity.

The Glastonbury Thorn
The Glastonbury thorn legend ties in Christ's
death as well as the celebration of his birth.
The legend goes that soon after the death of
Christ, Joseph of Arimathea came to Britain to
spread the message of Christianity. When he
traveled there from the Holy Land he brought with
him his staff. Being tired from his journey, he
lay down to rest. In doing so, he pushed his
staff into the ground beside him. When he awoke,
he found that the staff had taken root and begun
to grow and blossom. It is said he left it there
and it has flowered every Christmas and every
spring . It is also said that a puritan trying to
cut down the tree was blinded by a splinter of
the wood before he could do so. The original
thorn did eventually die but not before many
cuttings had been taken. It is one of these very
cuttings which is in the grounds of Glastonbury
Abbey today.

Christmas Pudding Christmas (or Plum) Pudding is
the the traditional end to the British Christmas
dinner. Christmas pudding originated as a 14th
century porridge called frumenty that was made
of beef and mutton with raisins, currants,
prunes, wines and spices. This would often be
more like soup and was eaten as a fasting meal in
preparation for the Christmas festivities.
By 1595, frumenty was slowly changing into a plum
pudding, having been thickened with eggs,
breadcrumbs, dried fruit and given more flavors
with the addition of beer and spirits. It became
the customary Christmas dessert around 1650, but
in 1664 the Puritans banned it as a bad custom.

Hong Kong Celebration
  • In Hong Kong, Chinese Christians celebrate
Christmas with church services in Chinese. At the
Anglican Cathedral, some are held in English,
because Europeans who live and work in Hong Kong
attend them as well as people from Hong Kong.
  • In Hong Kong, people also send Christmas cards,
many of which are home made using Chinese craft
    techniques.
  • Poinsettias flowers and Nativity scenes decorate
homes, churches and public places, as well as big
red and gold letters from the Chinese alphabet
    decorated streamers and paper chains.
  • Father Christmas, is known as Lan Khoong (Nice
Old Father) or Dun Che Lao Ren (Christmas Old
    Man) in Hong Kong.
