THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO STUDY
DAYLIGHTING IN A RESIDENTIAL SETTING AND TO APPLY
THE KNOWLEDGE LEARNED TO CURRENT AND FUTURE
DESIGNS.

TEST PERIOD. HYPOTHESIS 2 THE AVERAGE
FOOT-CANDLES MEASURED IN THE HALLWAY WILL RANGE
0-5 FOR THE TEST PERIOD. HYPOTHESIS 3
DAYLIGHTING IS IN THE MODERATE RANGE OF 20-100 IN
ALL SPACES (ILLUMINATING ENGINEERING SOCIETY OF
NORTH AMERICA)

A 3x3 GRID WAS PLACED OVER THE PLAN READINGS
WERE TAKEN AT EVERY POINT EVERY HOUR FROM 600
A.M. UNTIL 700 P.M. ON MARCH 31, 2004 ALL
READINGS WERE TAKEN AT 36 ABOVE THE FLOOR WITH
THE MINOLTA ILLUMINANCE METER ALL BLINDS WERE
OPEN AND NO ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING WAS SUPPLIED. THE
SKY WAS PARTLY TO MOSTLY CLOUDY THE ENTIRE DAY
(81 OF DAYS IN AKRON ARE PARTLY TO MOSTLY
CLOUDYWEATHER OF U.S. CITIES)

30CONCLUSIONS
HYPOTHESIS 1 DISPROVED THE AVERAGE FOOT-CANDELS
WAS NOT THE HIGHEST IN THE GREEN
SPACE. HYPOTHESIS 2 THE HALLWAY RANGE FOR
AVERAGE FOOT-CANDELS DID NOT REACH ABOVE 5. THE
ACTUAL RANGE IS 0-5 FOOT-CANDELS. HYPOTHESIS 3
ALL ROOMS FAILED TO AVERAGE 20-100 FOOT-CANDLES
EXCEPT THE MAIN LIVING AREA(YELLOW). THE
HIGHEST FOOT-CANDELS RECORDED OCCURRED NEAREST TO
THE TWO, THREE-SECTIONED WINDOWS.
AVERAGE FOOT-CANDLES FOR TESTING PERIOD
31CONCLUSIONS
THE NEW PLAN WILL ELIMINATE THE INTERIOR
HALLWAYAND MOST OF THE SOUTH FACING GLAZING. A
SECOND STORY WILL BE ADDED AND WILL INCORPORATE A
MASTER SUITE AND ONE BEDROOM WITH FULL BATH.
NINE FOOT CEILINGS WILL ALLOW BETTER DISTRIBUTION
OF DAYLIGHTING.
