2WHAT MOTIVATES THE RESURGENT INTEREST IN
DAYLIGHTING?
- In commercial and public buildings 40 to 50
- of the energy consumption accounts for
- artificial light, and 10 to 20 of energy
- consumption in industry. (US Department of
Energy, 2002) - It has potential for energy conservation.
- The energy cost saving by a good daylighting
- design.
- Daylighting may also reduce heating and
- cooling costs for a building.
- Daylighting influences on the productivity and
- health benefits of the occupants.
3- Commercial, industries and public facilities
- such as school, libraries and hospitals can
- have a significantly reduction of artificial
- lightning, by using daylight.
- Daylighting in combination with energy
- efficient lighting reduces the energy
- consumption considerably.
- The lighting power density can be reduced by
- using daylight, in some office buildings from
- 23.7 W/m² to 9.5 W/m², without any reduction
- in the measured light levels.

Light pipe installation in 1st floor corridor at
Fraunhofer ISE. Sunlight is directed into the
pipe via a heliostat and two fixed mirrors.

Daylight is then conducted by the pipe's
prismatic foil through the corridor (left) and
directed into rooms lacking windows (right).
