Title: Sinewave Energy Technologies

1
Sinewave Energy Technologies
  • Controlling HID Lighting
  • with Sinewave Technology

2
HID Lighting
  • High Intensity Discharge
  • These are arc tube type lamps, which require a
ballast to strike an arc inside the arc tube,
which then excites the surrounding gas to produce
    very bright light.
  • Metal Halide
  • The White light used in sports venues
  • High Pressure Sodium
  • The Yellow light often used in street lighting
  • Mercury Vapor
  • Being phased out, not often used anymore

3
Why Sinewave?
  • Dimming Solutions for HID Were Inadequate
  • SCR and SSR dimmers will NOT work arc
    extinguishes
  • Variac (Auto-transformer) dimmers increase
    harmonics and shorten bulb life
  • Hi-Lo controls do not dim HID slowly, resulting
in shortened lamp life, and cannot be retasked
  • IGBT dimming has been tried, but with high heat
    gain
  • Different types of HIDs with different ballasts
    respond differently

4
The Sinewave Solution
The Sinewave ESD Dimmer is an electronic dimmer
that varies the voltage output to the lighting
ballasts, which then reduce wattage to the lamps.
  • Sine Wave Dimmer (Ultra high speed PWM)
  • Adjusts amplitude (voltage) to change power to
    lamps
  • Monitors and makes adjustments 22,000 time per
    second
  • Filtered Capacitive ride-through (electronic
    flywheel) smoothes sine wave
  • Able to reduce power by up to 50 on Metal Halide
and up to 70 on Sodium lamps
  • Applicable to all types of lamps (HID,
    Incandescent)
  • Adheres to lamp mfgr. Specs
  • Soft start program
  • 15 minute warm-up full power
  • Slow dim 0.5 V per sec.
  • Rapid return
  • Reduces harmonic distortion
  • No harmonics or transients back on line
  • Smooth electronic ramping, -0.1
  • Infinitely variable

5
Sinewave Dimmers
  • Sinewave ESD Series Lighting Circuit Dimmers
  • Dim lighting circuits up to 30 Amps (3600 Watts _at_
    110 Vac, 8300 Watts _at_ 277 Vac)
  • Are digital, infinitely variable, and work with
    standard 0-10 Vdc control signals
  • Reduce bulb-killing harmonic distortion and can
    improve power factor
  • Have no mechanical parts to wear out or require
    maintenance
  • Typically show a payback on dimming HID lamps of
    less than 18 months
  • Are installed at the electrical panel, requiring
no rewiring of existing lighting fixtures
  • Qualify for utility rebates and tax credits.
  • Sinewave ESD Series Dimmers are used in
  • Parking Lighting Structures, Car Dealer Lots,
Shopping Mall Lots, Big Box Store Lots
  • Athletic Facilities Indoor Tennis Courts,
    Sports Clubs, Gymnasiums, Sports Fields
  • Warehouses Cold Storage, Trucking Depots,
    Manufacturing Areas
  • Security Architectural Refinery Lighting,
    Exterior Building Lighting
  • Daylight Harvesting Big Box stores with
    skylights, Bubble Enclosures

Frequently Asked Questions
  • What about color shift?
  • So long as we dim within specs (50 of HID, 70
for FL), there is no noticeable color shift
  • Can multiple circuits be connected?
  • Yes. A 30 Amp ESD can handle 2 15 Amp circuits
    (20 Amp circuit breakers).
  • Branch circuit breakers can be provided in the
    Sinewave enclosure.
  • HID, FL and Incandescent fixtures can be on the
    same dimming circuit
  • What about minimum ft-candle requirements?
  • Codes usually specify the ft-candles during
occupancy. The ESD dimmer returns to full
    lighting power when needed (occupied).
  • What effect does the ESD have on lamp life?
  • Generally the ESD will improve lamp life
  • Reduction of lamp-killing harmonics
  • Reduction of heat cooler operation of both lamp
    and ballast
  • Reduction of lamp restarts. Longer operation per
    start.

18
Frequently Asked Questions
  • Is the ESD warranted?
  • Yes. 2 years from date of installation, or 2
years 1 month from date of shipment
  • What happens if the power goes off and back on?
  • The ESD shuts off the lamps and then runs its
startup program again 15 minute warm-up before
    dimming
  • If the power glitch is less than 10 ms, the ESD
remains in operation and rides through
  • High speed UPS systems can switch without light
    loss
  • How can the ESD fail?
  • Loss of control signal the ESD will go to
minimum setting (50 for HID or 30 for FL)
  • Failure of control board
  • Failure of control circuit the ESD will go to
    maximum setting (100)
  • Failure of control interface to main board the
ESD will shut off the lamps
  • Failure of main board the ESD will shut off the
    lamps
  • Option for an emergency bypass switch (Murphy
    switch) for critical applications
  • What happens if I connect the ESD to active
    electronic ballasts?
  • The amp draw will increase as the ESD reduces the
    voltage no energy savings
  • Lamps will extinguish once the voltage has
reached the lower limit of the ballast
