The new secondary curriculum 8 weeks in!
2Three questions driving curriculum design,
development and implementation
- WHAT are we trying to achieve?
- HOW do we organise learning?
- HOW well are we achieving our aims?
3What are the main changes in the MFL programme of
study?
- No set topics and no restrictions on which
languages may be taught - Emphasis on active learning and creativity
- Stronger focus on links with other subjects
- Level descriptions aligned with the languages
ladder - Much greater focus on skills
Rachel Hawkes, Regional Subject Advisor
4MFL departments will want to ensure that their
provision
- Builds on learning in KS2
- Goes beyond the classroom and is about doing as
well as knowing - Deals with engaging topics and involves real
communication with native speakers - Teaches about other countries and cultures
Rachel Hawkes, Regional Subject Advisor
5Aims for this meeting
- Remind ourselves of the aims of the new
curriculum - Share some ideas, (resources lesson plans)
- Look at next steps

18Time to speed date..!
- Share your lesson idea with 1 person
- Spend only 3 minutes (there will be a whistle
after 6 minutes!) - Make any notes you like (the plan is to have all
ideas resources to take away on a CD anyway
though) - After 50 minutes we will have 8 ideas each
- Last few minutes to write your favourite idea
that you want to try out asap!
Rachel Hawkes, Regional Subject Advisor
19Next steps
- Keep sharing ideas
- Actively look for links with other subject areas
- Begin to consider evaluation
- How will we know it is working?
- Look back at what we want learners to look like
- Measure by student voice, self-report, compare
with year 8 - Volume, amount of student TL talk, vocabulary
tests, written work, speaking levels, interest
enthusiasm, number of questions asked
Rachel Hawkes, Regional Subject Advisor
20How did you learn your 14 Spanish words?
I taught myself then I taught my dad which taught
me as well.
21How did you learn your 14 Spanish words?
I made a song out of the words in Spanish. I
also had my brother help so when he gets to this
school it will help him.
22How did you learn your 14 Spanish words?
I learnt them all on one day then on the day
before the test my mum tested me on the
words/corrected me. Next she said sentences e.g.
I get up and have a shower then I had to say them
in Spanish and vice versa.
23How did you learn your 14 Spanish words?
I remembered these words by taking 3-4 words at a
time and memorised them through repetition and
gestures. After learning the 3-4 words, I asked
my mum to test me on those in any order. After
repeating this process I was able to recite these
words from memory.
24How did you learn your 14 Spanish words?
I got my sister to read out the English then I
say the Spanish. I did this after reading the
meanings then covering them up and saying them
again and again. My sister gave me a test on
them every night since we got the homework. She
pointed out the ones I needed to work on. I
needed to have a test every night because I
remember things best when I repeat things.
25How did you learn your 14 Spanish words?
I memorised the words by learning them by cutting
them into groups e.g. 1-5, 6-10, 11-14 etc..
