Title: CENN, Fall 2005, Week 5, 926102
1CENN, Fall 2005, Week 5, 9/26-10/2
2Welcome to the College of Education
3- The U.S. Education Department has created a
commission to devise a "comprehensive national
strategy" on higher education's future, Education
Secretary Margaret Spellings announced last week. - The panel is to focus on rising enrollments,
declining affordability, and colleges' role in
America's global competitiveness.
4- THE EDUCATIONAL TESTING SERVICE is expanding its
efforts to measure how savvy students are about
technology and about the information that they
get online. The testing service, which already
offers an information-literacy for students
entering their junior year of college, has
designed a new test for high-school seniors.

6- The world's population is expected to swell to
about nine billion people by 2050, becoming more
urban and older in the process (per Joel E.
Cohen, a professor of populations at Columbia
University). - The earth now grows by 74 million people each
year -- a number equal to about a quarter of the
United States' population. - The 20th century was probably the last in human
history in which younger people outnumbered older
ones.
7- THE U.S. HOUSE unanimously approved a three-month
extension of the Higher Education Act, freeing
lawmakers to work on hurricane-relief measures.
The act, which governs most federal student-aid
