Title: SERVICE-LEARNING . . . A School To Community Connection
1SERVICE-LEARNING . . . A
School To Community Connection
2SERVICE-LEARNING
- is a teaching/learning method that connects
academic learning - with
- meaningful community service
- and
- civic responsibility
3THEORY OF SERVICE-LEARNING
- John Dewey
- Progressivist Movement
- The mind is social, not individual, and thus
learning comes from social activities - Students should be able to shape their own
learning
4- More recently, Ralph Tyler and
- Hilda Taba have promoted the idea that students
who actually do things. - engage in activites that relate to subjects
- learn more efficiently, more effectively, and
remember what they have learned - much longer than students who do not

and personal responsibility - Allows students to become a part of rather than
apart from their communities - Teaches/Reinforces job skills
- Exposes/ prepares students for careers
- Empowers students as learners, teachers,
achievers and leaders - Contributes thousands of hours of service to
people in need
7Service-learning is emerging as an extremely
effective way to
- Offer students the opportunity to provide service
to their communities - Teach students important elements of character
- Provide students with an appreciation of what it
means to give back - Engage students through real life experiences
- Highlight students strength, skills and
abilities
8Service-learning provides
- students with the opportunities to use acquired
skills and knowledge in real life situations - projects and activities that are integrated into
the students academic curriculum - student learning and development through active
participation in organized service experiences - activities that are coordinated in collaboration
with the school and community
