Title: Reading Proficiency Tests in English (RPTE)
1Reading Proficiency Tests in English (RPTE)
2- This training does not take the place of
- reading the appropriate manuals
3General Information RPTE
- RPTE measures English reading ability according
to a language proficiency continuum that is based
on the stages of language development of second
language learners (p. 309). - RPTE testing schedule should be as uniform as
possible (I will be calling TEA for
clarification on this) - Date of RPTE II Field Test March 9th
- Date of RPTE live administration March 27th
- TELPAS turn in March 29th
- Every effort should be made to provide make-up
administrations for students who are absent from
RPTE on the scheduled day of testing
4General Information RPTE
- RPTE II will be implemented in the spring of 2008
- RPTE II will add a grade 2 assessment (grade span
will be 2-12) - RPTE II will be exclusively online in spring 2009
5General Information RPTE
- Grade clusters for RPTE and RPTE II
6RPTE II Field Test
- RPTE II field testing will occur with embedded
items in the live RPTE test administration and
online - BISD schools were selected for online RPTE II
field testing - Information for administering these field tests
will be provided to testing coordinators, test
administrators, and technology staff via the
Texas State Assessments website at
http//etest.pearson.com/customers/Texas/eoct/txeo
ct - Grade 2 students will field test RPTE II online
but will also be required to be rated for reading
proficiency through TOP Observation Protocol
7Spring 2007 RPTE II Field Testing
- Both paper and online field testing will occur
this spring during the TELPAS administration
window. - Paper field testing will occur much the same way
as last year (embedded items in Grades 312 RPTE
test booklets separate Grade 2 field-test
booklet).
Page 310
8Spring 2007 RPTE II Field Testing
- The paper booklets will be configured as they
were last year to enable RPTE I to be
administered and field-test data on RPTE II to be
collected. - The RPTE answer documents will match the
configuration of the test booklets.
Page 310
9Spring 2007 RPTE II Field Testing
- A mandatory, separate online field test will
occur for Grades 212. Statewide, about 1/3 of
the LEP students in these grades have been
selected to participate. - The selected students in Grades 312 will take
their RPTE test on paper and also the online
field test.
Page 310
10Spring 2007 RPTE II Field Testing
- For Grade 2, LEP students not selected to
participate in the online field test will take
the paper Grade 2 field test. Grade 2 students
will not take both a paper and online field test.
Page 310
11RPTE II Online Field Testing
- Students who will not take the online field test
- ARD-exempt LEP students served by special
education - 2nd semester immigrant students deemed by
the LPAC to read virtually no English - visually impaired students served by special
education or under Section 504 who need a
braille or large-print test (These are not
available for field tests.)
12RPTE II Field Testing, Grade 2
- The fact that there is a statewide Grade 2 field
test does not mean second graders will not be
assessed in TOP reading. - Second graders will be rated for TOP in all
domains, as in the past. The rating of TOP
reading will be discontinued when RPTE II is
implemented in spring 2008.
Page 310
13RPTE II Field Testing, Grade 2
- Grade 2 paper booklets will be shipped regardless
of whether the paper or online version of the
Grade 2 field test is being administered. - In both cases, the student identification
information, TOP score code, and TOP rating
information must be filled in on the cover of the
paper booklet.

might aid students during testing must be covered

- Plan to move students who need extra time to
another testing room if necessary - No school activities that would interfere with
testing conditions or timing should be scheduled - Students who are absent on their scheduled day of
testing should be given a make-up test before
March 30th.
