in a range of accolades in 2008, Beacon Status
for Climate Change, Most Improved Council (LGA)
and the award of a CPA Four Star.
6In the next 10 years the Council will be working
with the London Thames Gateway Development
Corporation and the London Development Agency to
transform Dagenham Dock into Londons home for
green business.

9City of London
The City of London Corporation provides local
government services for the Square Mile, the
financial and commercial heart of Britain The
Corporation works nationally and internationally
to maintain and enhance the City as a
world-leading international financial and
business centre It serves London and the UK with
special responsibilities such as the Barbican
Arts Centre, the Central Criminal Court at the
Old Bailey
Sir Michael Snyder Deputy
Administration for 10,000 acres of open space
including Hampstead Heath and Epping Forest,
three wholesale food markets, three inner-London
City Academies, the City Bridge Trust, economic
regeneration programmes in neighbouring boroughs
and acting as Londons Port Health Authority
10"Cheapside lies at the heart of the City of
London. The area is currently undergoing a
dramatic transformation as a series of major new
developments are constructed that will more than
double the amount of retail floorspace over the
next few years. This is the equivalent of the
shopping centre development at White City but in
a high street location.
The Cheapside Area Strategy aims to reinstate
Cheapside's historic role as the City's main
market place and conduit of social life. The new
developments, combined with an exciting cultural
programme of events, enhanced street scene and
transport improvements can establish Cheapside as
the City's pre-eminent retail and leisure
destination, seven days a week."
11LB Dartford
Vision At the heart of the Boroughs vision is
the common sense innovation that new buildings
should have an indirect community benefit
alongside a sustainable primary purpose. Proof of
this approach is evident in the new Princes Park
Community Stadium, IT training centre in
Swanscombe and of course the Dartford Dojo
which is primarily a centre of excellence for
sport but will inevitably become a community
benefit for local Stone residents.
Cllr Jeremy A Kite Leader (Conservative)
Background The population of the Borough is
85,900 residents and approximately 37,400
households. Located on the border of Kent,
London and Essex, Dartford is one of the most
exciting and dynamic regions in the
country. Dartford is at the heart of one of the
Governments key growth zones within the Thames
Gateway and will see around 20,000 new homes and
up to 50,000 new jobs created in the borough over
the next 25 years a substantial addition to the
existing 80,000 residents in the Borough.
12- The future for Dartford is similarly bright.
Despite the plans to increase substantially in
size there is an underlying commitment to
quality of design, build and purpose. The
Bridge development, just a few hundred metres
from the Dartford Dojo, highlights perfectly the
direction that Dartford is taking towards
sustainability.
Dartford Bridge
An exemplar of public-private partnership, The
Bridge is redefining the rules for large scale
mixed-use development. By Integrating the needs
of commercial occupiers and residents with a
thoughtful approach to the natural environment,
The Bridge highlights how the Borough is moving
towards the future. If only ALL Councils were
like DARTFORD!
13LB Greenwich
Greenwich is known across the globe as the home
of the Prime Meridian longitude 00 - from which
world time, Greenwich Mean Time, was first
calculated. The boroughs royal associations,
its architectural gems and its fabulous open
spaces including those of the Maritime
Greenwich World Heritage Site help attract
around 9 million visitors to the borough each
year. Greenwich is preparing for a further role
in the worlds spotlight when the borough hosts
the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Cllr Chris Roberts Leader (Labour)
Tourism contributes to around 25 per cent of jobs
in the borough.
Greenwichs pioneering local employment scheme
has placed almost 10,000 local people into work.
Working with developers and securing support
through Section 106 agreements has helped us
secure jobs and training for local people on
high-profile developments and inspired similar
schemes across the country
14Greenwich Peninsula is home to The O2 Arena
officially the worlds most successful
entertainment venue. The next phase of
development at the Peninsula will feature 10,000
new homes, a newly built secondary school, and an
employment and business hub focusing on creative
industries.
Greenwich Council fought hard to bring new
transport links to the borough. The Jubilee Line
at Greenwich Peninsula and DLR extensions to
Greenwich and Woolwich have proved key catalysts
for regeneration. Crossrail will bring economic
benefits for the borough estimated at over 80
million. Greenwich Council remains committed to
a new Thames crossing which will vastly improve
access to the relatively isolated north-east of
the borough.
The o2 Centre
15LB Hackney
Hackney is the Gateway's home for the creative
economy Hackney is delivering the most
innovative regeneration programmes in the
Gateway Hackney is proud to be one of the Five
Host Boroughs for the London 2012 Olympic and
Paralympic Games
Mayor Jules Pipe Leader (Labour)
- In March 2009, Hackney was awarded Beacon status
for using the Opportunity of Hosting the 2012
Games to encourage communities to be more active.
- Mayor Pipe and the Council will continue to use
every opportunity to press Olympic
decision-makers for the best outcome possible for
our borough, residents and local businesses.
16Hackney is home to one of the most culturally
diverse communities in the Gateway with a young
and dynamic population Carnival and Festival
bring all our communities together
Hackney is the most exciting place to be in the
Gateway - a centre of enterprise and creativity,
and a stunning opportunity for investment
17LB Havering
Havering is already a great borough with a high
quality of life, good services and many
achievements to its name. The opportunities for
this borough over the next twenty years are
almost without limit.
Cllr Michael White Leader (Conservative)
- London Riverside is the largest regeneration
opportunity in the Thames Gateway. Its successful
development will be of both regional and national
significance. The Havering part of London
Riverside could, by 2020, generate - 6,000 new jobs
- 5,000 new homes
- An internationally recognised conservation park
attracting 1 million visitors annually - A revitalised Historic Village as a gateway to
the Wildspace conservation park
18Romford is a major metropolitan centre and is the
biggest town centre in East London as well as one
of the top 15 shopping centres in the South East.
It has some of the top performing stores in the
country and has 25 million visitors a year with
an annual turn over of 500m.
Liberty Shopping Centre
The regeneration of Havering Riverside is a key
objective of the Council. It is working in
partnership with national and regional agencies,
local business, the voluntary and community
sector and resident communities to secure new
sustainable communities, recreation
opportunities, open space, new transport links,
social infrastructure and high quality employment
areas providing job opportunities for the
existing and new populations.
19LB Lewisham
Our aim is to ensure that no section of the
community is excluded from the benefits
regeneration can bring and no voice goes unheard

Regeneration Strategy 2008-20
Sir Steve Bullock Elected Mayor (Labour)

diverse, cohesive and healthy local communities
able to support themselves, act independently and
engage actively in partnerships to ensure
local people of all ages benefit from
regeneration.
20Lewisham is a great place to live. There are over
29,000 council properties and we are working in
partnership with housing associations to increase
the supply of new homes each year.

21LB Newham
Newham has Londons largest regeneration and
development programme Key projects in
Stratford, Custom House and Canning Town will
transform the borough in the coming years As
home to the Olympic Stadium, Athletes Village,
and the Olympic Park, Newham is proud to play its
part in hosting the London 2012 Olympic and
Paralympic Games
Sir Robin Wales Leader (Labour)
Newham has a young and dynamic workforce.
Crucial to our vision are the people who call
this place home. Newham is one of the most
diverse places on earth with one of the youngest
populations in Europe
2240 of Newhams population is under 25 more than
100 languages are spoken locally Since is began
in 2007 our employment partnership Workplace has
placed 2000 people into work. We aim to get a
further 1000 people into work by March 2010.
Newham is home to Londons best connections. With
an international airport on our doorstep and
excellent rail and tube links, there isnt a
better-connected borough. The place, the people
and the connections combine together to make
Newham a fantastic investment opportunity.
23LB Redbridge
Redbridge is one of the greenest boroughs in East
London. Last year household recycling in
Redbridge rose to 26 per cent. Green garden waste
and compost collection increased and the Borough
offered subsidised composting bins to
residents Redbridge Schools are amongst the best
in England ranking amongst the top three local
authorities last year 95 of students achieved
five or more passes at GCSE Adult social care in

excellent for providing services that improved
the quality of life for elderly residents
Cllr Alan Weinberg Leader (Conservative)
24Valentines Mansion and Gardens were restored to
their former glory and reopened to the public in
March. The opening weekend was a huge success
with over 5,000 visitors

the first London Borough to benefit from the 2012
Olympic legacy with a 4.5 million state of the
art cycling centre

December 2008 and the 3 car extension of the DLR - East London Line extension includes the new
Shoreditch High Street station at Bishopsgate
Langdon Park Station
27LB Waltham Forest
Regeneration in East London will bring employment
opportunities for all our community, and we need
to make sure local people have the right skills
for these jobs and that transport is improved
so they can get to them easily We also need to
make sure that people who move into Waltham
Forest and are successful then want to stay here
Cllr Clyde Loakes Leader (Labour)
We want our borough to be a place people choose
to live and work We are proud to be one of the
Five Host Boroughs for the London 2012 Olympic
and Paralympic Games
28To get the best for our families and future
generations, we need to decide what kind of place
we want Waltham Forest to be and work together
to make it happen New housing, a 250 million
investment in schools, a rapidly-changing
population, the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games
and the 4 billion Stratford City development
all of this exciting investment, in or near
Waltham Forest, needs to benefit local people and
businesses
William Morris Gallery
We are part of a fast-changing capital city, and
should make the most of the benefits that brings
from transport links to job opportunities
29- The NHS in the London Thames Gateway is working
to tackle three key strategic challenges. - Planning for Growth
-
- The development of a more sophisticated model is
necessary to identify the appropriate social
infrastructure (SIF) required to support
residential and economic growth. - 2. Tackling Health Inequalities
- Addressing some of the highest levels of obesity
in the UK, without which todays children will be
the first generation to die before their parents.
- Within the London Thames Gateway are some of the
highest levels of STDs and unplanned pregnancies. - We have some of the lowest levels of physical
activity resulting in some of the highest levels
of stroke and cardiovascular conditions. We are
working in partnership with Pro Active East to
stimulate a 1 increase (15,288 individuals) in
engaging in physical activity.
30- Dementia levels within the UK total 600,000.
Within the LTG area the levels are broadly within
the national average. However, the overall total
is likely to double within the next 30 years. To
ensure that LTG levels do not follow this
projected increase we are seeking to develop
early intervention, early diagnosis and early
treatment.
- 3. Achieve a lasting health legacy inspired by
the 2012 Games - LTG boroughs are in the bottom 22 of
participation in physical activity across London.
We are supporting NHS London in their ambition,
inspired by the Olympics, to move 2 million
inactive people across London into an active and
healthy lifestyle.
