1Engineering Research Centers Program2006 Annual
Meeting
- Annual Reporting and Database Indicators-- A
Program Level Perspective
November 30, 2006 Dr. Barbara Kenny

Core Partners, 2006
3Why do we need Annual Reports and ERCWeb Data?
- ERC Program Management
- Are Centers achieving ERC goals?
- Site Visit teams need data to assess ERC progress
and plans - Program Directors need information to make
funding recommendations - Data and information requests from NSF upper
management - What have you done for the taxpayer lately?
- Benchmarking ERCs with national data, by industry
sector, with each other - Overall ERC effectiveness studies
- Centers themselves need data and information to
effectively management a multi-million dollar
enterprise
4ERC Program Goals
- Create and sustain an integrated,
interdisciplinary research environment to enable
transforming systems technologies - Educate a globally competitive and diverse
engineering workforce - Join academe and industry in partnership to
advance fundamental engineering knowledge and
engineered systems
5ERC Activities to Achieve Goals
- Develop a transforming, interdisciplinary systems
vision that motivates the ERC - Develop maintain a strategic plan to achieve
the vision meet ERC objectives - Organize effective research thrusts and testbeds
to overcome technological barriers and realize
the vision - Conduct integrated, high quality research that
supports systems vision - Develop ERC graduates who can integrate
interdisciplinary knowledge speed innovation - Develop interdisciplinary system courses and
courses of studies - Promote undergraduate involvement in research
teams - Develop execute K-12 outreach for both teachers
students - Achieve diversity in students and faculty
- Develop strong partnerships with
industry/practitioners - Expeditiously transfer technology developments to
industry practitioners - Implement effective Center leadership and
management
6Reporting Requirements
- Annual Report or Renewal Proposal reporting on
strategic vision, activities, progress, plans and
achievements - Provide information to site visit team and
Program Director - Submission of nuggets
- Internal management tool record of
accomplishments - ERCWeb Indicators Database submission of
quantitative data to Web-based templates - Collection of standard measures of performance
across all ERCs - Information base for ERC management to monitor
performance - Information base to help NSF evaluate
center-level and program-level progress in
achieving goals - Information base for ERC Program to report to
NSF, OMB and Congress on Program Achievements - Interim Reports reporting on progress with
supplemental funds

28Final Remarks
- ERCs have been in existence since 1985
- 41 ERCs
- 19 current ERCs plus 3 EERCs
- Model for other programs
- Nanoscience and Engineering Centers (NSEC)
- Science and Technology Centers (STC)
- Materials Research Science and Engineering
Centers (MRSEC) - ERC Program has 20 years of data to prove
effectiveness - Challenge now is to maintain relevant data
collection without increasing the burden on the
Centers
29Three Discussion Questions
- What are the top 3 things you like about the data
collection and annual reporting system as it is
now? - What are the top 3 things you dont like about
the data collection and annual reporting system
as it is now? - What are the best indicators to showcase your
achievements? Are we capturing them?
