Mary Jones was from a very poor family in Wales.
One day at chapel, it was announced that a school
was going to be built in the town.
Now I can learn to read. One day Ill be able to
read the Bible.

Mary went to the new school, worked hard and soon
learned to read. She asked her mother if she
could get a Bible to read at home.
Im sorry Mary, but we cant afford a Bible
I can read well now. Can you get a Bible for me?

Mary started doing jobs to make some money. She
looked after chickens, knitted socks and weeded
peoples gardens.
When I have saved enough money, I can buy myself
a Bible

After 6 years of work, Mary finally saved up
enough money to buy a Bible. But there was no-one
in her village who sold them.
Ill have to walk to Bala to see Reverend
Charles. He sells Bibles, I can get one there.

After her long walk, she arrived in Bala. But
when she went to see Reverend Charles, he said he
only had one Bible left, and hed promised it to
someone else.
Mary was so disappointed that she began to cry.

But when Reverend Charles heard that she had been
saving her money for six years, he was very
moved. He decided that she deserved to have the
last Bible.
After meeting Mary, Reverend Charles went on to
start the British and Foreign Bibles Society in
1804, to try and make sure that people all over
the world had access to a copy of the Bible
