Discuss the increased number of high school
students taking college level classes, how
colleges look at these courses. AP,IB and SUNY in
the High School are all popular ways for high
school students to get a jump on college.

This workshop will explain the differences in
these programs, how they are considered by
college admission offices and how credit may be
awarded.

This workshop will also address varied reasons
for beginning at two-year colleges and the
transferability from the two-year college, to
four-year colleges and universities.

Cover topics such as general education
requirements, the transfer application process,
honors and scholarship opportunities, resources
for effective planning, and skills for creating
the most effective plan for seamless transitions
after high school. Transfer terms, such as 22
programs, articulation, joint admission,
guaranteed transfer, and advanced standing will
be explained.

- Not everyone wants or is ready for a four-year
college. - Many of New Yorks best and brightest students
choose to begin at two-year colleges - Phi Theta Kappa, Honors Programs

13Getting started on the General Education
Curriculum at Community Colleges These
requirements apply to all state-operated
institutions offering undergraduate degrees. It
requires baccalaureate degree candidates, as a
condition of graduation, to complete a General
Education program of no fewer than 30 credit
hours specifically designed to achieve the
student learning outcomes in ten knowledge and
skill areas and two competencies. Basic
communication skills are also required.

Curriculum at Community Colleges
- The knowledge and skills areas include
Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences,
American History, Western Civilization, Other
World Civilizations, Humanities, the Arts,
Foreign Language and Basic Communication. - The competencies include Critical Thinking
(Reasoning) and Information Management.

16Transfer Credits Generally, four year schools
will accept about 64 credits from a 2-year
school, 90 from a 4-year school. Some accept
grades of D or higher, others C or higher. It is
always important to check policies as they may
vary.

- Spring/Fall - transfer students are typically
reviewed on a rolling basis. However, some
programs/campuses may publish very specific

- Waiver of Application fee for transfers
- The State University waives the 40 application
fee for up to four-college choices for student
graduating from SUNY or CUNY two-year colleges
who APPLY DIRECTLY to the State University
four-year colleges for baccalaureate programs
18Honors programs/scholarships/Financial Aid
Financial aid availability (a caution) 3
years for the Associates and 3 additional years
for the bachelors degree we dont want to see
transfer students max out on their financial aid
eligibility.
19EOP Transfers
Transfers are eligible for EOP as a transfer
student provided they have been enrolled in EOP,
College Discovery, HEOP (Higher Education
Opportunity Program), SEEK (Search for Education,
Elevation and Knowledge) or a similar academic
and financial support program at their previous
college. If their previous college did not have
EOP or a similar program, the student might be
considered for transfer eligibility and should
notify the college to which they are
transferring.

21Housing
- Campus Housing exists in all SUNY sectors
- Students can select a two-year campus with
housing and transition to a four-year campus with
housing. - Students can select to attend their local
community college as a commuter and transition to
the four-year campus as a residential student. - Two year schools with on-campus housing include
- Clinton, FIT, Fulton-Montgomery, Genesee,
Herkimer, Mohawk Valley, Monroe, North Country,
Sullivan and Tompkins Cortland.
