Information about The Hokies
  • Virginia Tech teams are known as the "Hokies".
"Hokie" (in its various forms) has been around at
least since 1842. Hokie was a word that people
would say to express great feeling, approval,
    excitement, and surprise. Hokie then,
synonymous with words like 'hooray,' or 'yeah,'
    or 'rah.
  • The word "hokie" came from the "Old Hokie" spirit
yell created in 1896 by O.M. Stull for a contest
to find a new school spirit yell when the
    college's name was changed.
  • The mascot is the Hokie Bird, a turkey-like bird.
The teams were originally called the "Fighting
Gobblers," and the turkey motif was kept even
    after the name change.
