  • The year 1848 highlighted by rash revolutions in
    Europe, was filled with unrest in America. The
    treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo had officially ended
    the war with Mexico, but it had initiated a new
    perilous round of political warfare with Mexico.

The Popular sovereignty Panacea
  • President Polk suffered from chronic diarrhea and
    could not serve his second term.
  • The democratic national convention turned to a
    new leader General Lewis Cass.
  • His enemies dubbed him General Cass and also
    noted that Cass rhymed with jack.
  • Cass believed in popular sovereignty

  • The Whig party nominated Zachary Taylor
  • The Whig party dodged all troublesome issues and
    merely extolled the homespun virtues of their
    candidate

Douglas Kansas Nebraska scheme
  • Douglas wanted to get rid of the north south
    deadlock
  • He proposed that the Nebraska territory be split
    in two and that they chose slavery by popular
    sovereignty
  • Douglas's plan contradicted the Missouri
    compromise
  • North fought to protect the Missouri compact the
    south dis regarded the Missouri compact
