• Amazonian tribe struggling to survive
• 5-day tour among the Huaorani in the Amazonian
  rainforest

Meet the Otavaleños

• 3 days in Andean village with Otavaleño families
• Learn how traditional crafts and innovation keep
  this native culture alive and prosperous

Meet the Zumbaguas

• Visit this high altitude Indian village and meet
  its people
• Learn of traditional subsistence and modern
  challenges of indigenous peoples

Meet the Tsachilas

• One of only two surviving Indian nations in the
  coastal lowlands
• Visit their homes
• Learn how they relate to Lippis archaeology
  project

Visit Archaeological Sites

• See the rainforest region Prof. Lippi has been
  exploring for 2 decades
• Visit some key archaeological sites
• Stay at lodge in cloud forest preserve

Reading for Study Abroad

• One book (Savages) on the Huaorani and threats to
  their survival
• A few articles on early travelers and the other
  indigenous peoples we will meet

Registration

• 3-credit UW Colleges course
• Register for special topics course
• ANT 291--Indians of Ecuador, or
• ENG 290Travel Narratives about South America
• Enrollment limited to approximately 16 students
  from all 13 UW Colleges campuses
• Students with some Spanish language ability will
  be given priority

Cost?

• Approx. 3,300 (incl. travel, meals, lodging,
  tuition/fees)
• Some scholarship money should be available for
  qualifying students

Tentative Trip Itinerary

• 2 days travel to and from U.S.
• 5 days in and around Quito, capital of Ecuador
• 5 days among Huaorani in Amazonia
• 3 days among Otavaleños in Andes
• 1 day among Zumbagua in Andes
• 2 days exploring Lippis archaeological research
  region
• 2 days at Pacific beach
• 1 day among Tsachilas in coastal lowlands
