What is the Internet?
  • A series of servers all over the world able to
    exchange files.
  •
  •        Email this technologys killer app
  •        FTP - file transfer protocol
  •        World wide web - hyperlinked pages

6
Server name
Country
  • www.staff.vu.edu.au/TAFEMkt
  • Type of organization
  • Directory

7
Using email
  • Attachments - not all mail readers handle them
  • Embed graphics and other files within an email or
a series of them by encoding with MIME, UUENCODE,
    YEnc, etc.
  • Encoding assumes that the reader has access to
    the same software to decode
  • Archivers to compress one or a bundle of files to
save disk space and/or bandwidth. ZIPs are the
most common form but there are many others (ZOO,
PAK, LHA, etc). Modern archivers handle many
formats and are available for download. Self
extracting archives be set up no need for
software the archive is converted into an EXE
program that unpacks the archive when you run it.
  • see pages 225 - 230 Ch 7 Direct marketing

8
Groups
  • Discussion groups There are over 50,000
discussion groups on every conceivable topic.
    Eg. Alt.alien.vampire.flonk.flonk.flonk Some
are moderated and some are not. Some confined to
subscribers to a particular service or network
and some are public. Can be used for promotional
purposes if you have something people want to
listen to. One of the humour conferences has
jokes posted every day by a large retailer.
  • Listservs a mailing list that goes out each
day. You have to be a member to receive it. Eg.
    Marketing educators newsgroup moderated by
    Princeton

9
Other email related
  • Standard letters should be developed and ready
to be sent out to reply to standard queries.
  • Signature files approximately 6 lines.
Appended to the end of the message by a lot of
mailer packages. Include name, phone number,
    email, website, etc.
  • Mailbots automatic replies sent out when
message hits a special web address

10
Internet Browsers
  • What you see is not what they get
  • Set ups can be altered on most browsers. Colors
of background, size of font etc.
  • Capabilities
  • Text only and DOS based browsers not common
    now.
  • The big G and the need for speed. Some users
with slow connections appreciate being able to
turn off fancy graphics, sound files and film
clips that take a long time to load.
  • JAVA applets and capabilities
  • Sound files WAV, MP3
  • Video

11
Picture formats
  • Bigger is NOT better why use a format that is
    wider than the screen?
  • BMP bitmaps used by windows not very good for
    web pages
  • GIF can be animated and have transparent
backgrounds. Good for drawings and cartoons but
    not photos
  • JPG good for photos

12
Search Engines
  • Spiders send out artificially intelligent webbots
to prowl the web looking for new sites, following
up links etc. They look at page titles, meta
tags, etc. to compile a listing of what is on the
    page.
  • Yahoo one of the first engines. Had to submit
sites and have these evaluated by people.
  • Hermaphrodites do both
  • Some engines have arrangements with other
providers. Inhktomi powers several other search
engines but has no public face.

13
Engine Specialization
  • The more well known offer a broad but shallow
    topic coverage
  • Specialist sites and engines dealing for specific
topics. several of these are for subscribers
    only.
  • A lot of portal sites offer links to search
    engines, news services, shopping, etc.
  • See the Wired 2000 page for details on various
    search engines

14
Your online shop
  • Your group will be setting up an online retail
operation selling real products to real customers
from a real online website by the end of the
semester. The assessment items are designed to
help you with what you will need to do to
    succeed.
  • Your business idea MUST BE APPROVED BY THE
INSTRUCTORS. It must be legal and have nothing
to do with sex, intoxicants or nightclubs
  • NAMES OF GROUP MEMBERS TO BE SUBMITTED NOW

15
Task 1 Opportunity idea generation and
exploration 10
  • Prepare an information gathering plan to get the
information you will need to decide which
business idea to develop. Your plan should
    combine online research and non-electronic
sources of information. Relevant Search engines
and databases should be identified. Your plan
should include a table showing each information
item you want to get, where you think you can get
it, the group member who will get it and how it
will help you make your decision.
  •
  • Submit your list of ideas and information
gathering plan for grading. Approximately 2 typed
    pages.

16
What sorts of business opportunities will your
group consider and how will you go about choosing
the best one?
  • Make a list of at least ten possible ideas for
    further investigation.
  • To do this each group member should write down
  • Part or full time jobs
  • Contacts through family or friends
  • Hobbies (arts and crafts, collecting things,
    etc.)
  • Sports interests
  • Skills (like hairdressing, makeup, cooking, car
    detailing
  • Consider
  • Things you can make or grow
  • Services you can provide
  • Things you can obtain and sell
  • Etc

17
Some factors to look at when deciding on a
possible business idea are
  • People this will appeal to how many are there
do they buy on the net?
  • Competition are there other places they can get
    the same thing
  • What equipment, people and skills do we need?
have we got them or can we get them?
  • What are the suppliers like?
  • How much money will this take? How much will it
    generate?

18
DID YOU GET IT?Write your answer to each of the
following on a piece of paper without looking at
notes or asking anyone. Swap papers with the
person next to you
  • What is a web browser?
  • What is a URL?
  • What is a protocol?
  • What is a search engine?

19
Purpose and scope of the research brief
  • What is the problem?
  • What are we trying to do?
  • What are the main decisions we have to make?
  • What is at stake? How important is this?
  • Who is involved?
  • Time
  • Resources available
