The story of The Lion King was first told on film in a Walt Disney animated feature. It, like most Walt Disney animated movies, became an instant hit. It was just a matter of time before it was developed for the stage.
The play opened on July 8, 1997, in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Orpheum Theatre, and was an instant hit even before premiering on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theater on November 13, 1997. Cheap Lion King tickets became very popular items.

Simba, the future king of the Pridelands is driven from his homeland by his uncle who steals the throne. The young cub takes up with an unlikely pair of happy-go-lucky animals and he grows to follow their philosophy of live life as it comes.
Like all great theater that comes before, he eventually runs head first into his destiny, and is forced to make the choice to face it or run again.
In true heroic fashion, he faces his fear and retakes his rightful place on the throne by defeating his uncle and making his fathers spirit proud.

4 Seeing The Lion King
Since its opening in 1997, The Lion King has drawn audiences to Broadway. In the history of Broadway, it is the seventh longest-running play. On June 13, 2006, the Broadway show moved to the Minskoff Theatre.
The cast of the London gave a command performance at the London Palladium on December 11, 2008, to senior members of the British Royal Family.
A Canadian production has been staged in Toronto. A Los Angeles production has performed at the Pantages Theatre. The production appeared at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney, Australia as well as the Regent Theater in Melbourne. It has also performed in Johannesburg, South Africa and Paris, France. It has been performed in Taipei, Mexico City, Las Vegas and Madrid, among others.
