We believe the time is now right to go back to
smaller and more economical commercial Sailing
Fishing Boats. Because of the event of diesel
power, the Sailing trade and know how has also
been lost, but now with the booming fuel crises
and uneconomically large over sized and
sophisticated steel Fishing Ships, the cost of
catching fish is just sky rocketing and profits
are down so most of the fishing companys today
are staring bankruptcy in the face. We have
been propagating over the last 25 years that we
should be designing boats and fishing methods on
a smaller scale and using today's technology in
hull and sail designs, but keeping the operation
on the boat low tech and easily repairable
especially for African waters. Sail Fishing
especially lends itself to catching Long Line
deep sea Tuna, Swordfish and Shark. The complete
operation can be done under Sail Power.
THIS IS THE SUPER5 (5METRES LONG) UNSINKABLE,
BEACH LAUNCHABLE, DIESEL DRIVEN, SAILING

ROWING BOAT, ESPECIALLY DESIGNED FOR
AFRICA.

MANAGEMENT
OWNER
The owner of Schaafsma Marine Boat Builders (the
business), Mr Rob Schaafsma is a person with
vast experience in boat building, sailing,
fishing and business. Mr Schaafsma has 30 years
experience in designing and building high-tech
sailing boats, specializing in modern sailing
fishing practices. His extensive sailing
experience in deep ocean sailing includes a 3
year adventure with his family on his boat
Sailtrader (built by Mr Schaafsma)
circumnavigating the African continent, which
included sailing 3 seas and 4 oceans namely
North and South Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea, Red
Sea, Arabian Sea and the North and South Indian
Ocean. Having sailed some of the worst seas in
the world qualifies him as a very accomplished
sailor and particularly on sailing-fishing boats.
Read the story of the Schaafsmas 3 year sailing
adventure and Narrow escape with the Red Sea
Pirates. In 1980 he was commissioned by the
fisheries development corporation of SA (VISCOR)
to prove the concept of fishing from a sailing
boat, which proved a great success after only one
trip to Seamount Vema in the mid Atlantic.
Unfortunately VISCOR was discontinued soon after.
He therefore continued on his own taking sports
fisherman to Seamount Vema.He also, with very
limited resources, built a second boat
Sailfisher using his extensive knowledge of
sailing and fishing, thereby creating the ideal
sailing fishing boat incorporating modern
techniques of line fishing using hydraulics line
haulers and winches for bottom and long line
fishing. Mr. Schaafsma recognized the strategic
potential of Saldanha Bay for the future and
wishes to develop the sail fishing industry to be
able to use all opportunities for growth.

BOAT BUILDING
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND
Saldanha Bay is situated about 125 kilometers
from Cape Town. Saldanha forms the backbone of
the fishing industry on the West Coast of South
Africa. Saldanha is also regarded as one of the
more important holiday locations along the West
Coast due to its safe beaches, fresh seafood,
yachting, flowers and various other tourist
attractions. The older local people of Saldanha,
are mainly born and bred fisherman. It is more
realistic to look at the whole West Coast area
including the towns of Saldanha, Vredenburg, St
Helena and Paternoster for socio-economic and
economic indicators. The average maximum
temperature is 20.9 C and the minimum is 11.400
C. Thus the general average through the year is
16.1 C. The average rainfall is 255mm per year
with the heaviest rainfall in the winter months
from May to August. The fishing industry employs
about 4600 people and is predominantly based in
Saldanha and St Helena Bay. Sea Harvest is the
single most employed with 3000 employees. Recent
large scale developments of significance
are Namakwa Sands Smelter with 850 employees and
the Saldanha Steel Project that created 600 job
opportunities. These developments, amongst
others, and the result of tourism in the area on
the West Coast becoming a blooming tourist
industrial center on its own. Other large
employers are Portnet and Spoornet with - 1150
permanent workers The infrastructure on the West
Coast is excellent with tar roads linking all
main centers, and a national road from Saldanha
linking the west Coast to Cape Town. Saldanha has
the largest and deepest natural harbor in the
Southern Hemisphere, mainly used for bulk export
like iron ore. Saldanha Bay with its strategic
geographic location, sufficient infrastructure
and available labour, provides an ideal
opportunity for the planned boat building
business. Fishing under sail has been around for
hundreds of years and is still being used in many
parts of Africa and the rest of the world. In
South Africa however, it is a relatively new
concept to the SA fishing industry. With the
ongoing escalation of fuel prices and the world
ecological concerns the time seems to be right
to aggressively introduce this new concept, not
only in SA but to expand it world wide.

THE BUSINESS
Type. The business will be operated as a private
company. Vision. To be the world leader in
building commercial sailing fishing
boats Mission. To build commercial sailing
fishing boats equipped with the most modern
technology for deep-sea Long line fishing for
international markets. Goals. The long-term goal
is to ensure profitable and economic fishing,
irrespective of bad economic conditions and to
ensure growth of the business to such a nature
that it would be regarded as a world leader in
5-7 years time.
  • Advantages of the sailing fishing boat.
  • The following are advantages of the sailing
fishing boat in comparison to the Conventional
    fishing boats.
  • The sails can be used to stabilize the boat from
    pitching and rolling violently
  • in stormy weather, unlike a conventional
fishing boat. Because the wind blows
  • against the sails to drive it forward and the
boat heels over to one side, it does
  • not rock from side to side, as does a
    conventional fishing boat.
  • A sailing boat does not pitch as much as a
    conventional fishing boat because
  • of its sharp bow and racked stern. The boat is
designed that it parts the water
  • at the bow and closes the water at the stern.
There is no wake following a
  • sailing boat and this proves there is no loss
    of horsepower.
  • A sailing boat is the safest boat in the world.
It cannot capsize and if it runs out
  • of diesel, it can always be sails back to the
harbor. The weight of the keel always
  • keeps the boat upright and stops it from being
    blown sideways.
  • A sailboat is not slow, as is always implied.
It has a motor just like a conventional
  • fishing boat and is more streamlined and
    needs less horsepower.
  • A sailing fishing boat is much more bad weather
    friendly than a conventional
  • fishing boat. The reason being that when the
sails are up, the wind heals the boat
