- America gained independence from Great Britain on
July 4th, 1776.

- Our Constitution was adopted in 1787.
- One year later, in 1788, America had a parade to
celebrate their freedom. - That is why we have celebrations on July4th.

- The seal is the emblem for the US government.
- E Pluribus Unum stands for one out of many.
- This means we are one nation made of many states

- The first American to step foot on the moon was
Neil Armstrong. - This happened in 1969.

- This is our national anthem.
- An anthem is a song.
- It was a poem.
- Francis Scott Key wrote it in 1812.
- He saw a flag waving during the bombing in Fort
Henry with the British in the War of 1812.

- The worlds largest flag is 255 feet wide and 505
feet long. - The first flag was made in 1776.
- It was designed by Francis Hopkinson.
- The seamstress was Betsy Ross.

- The 13 stars in a circle on the original flag
stood for the 13 original colonies. - The stars were in a circle to show that all
colonies were equal.

- The flag represents the right to defend or
protect a cause.
- The current flag has 50 stars that represent the
50 states. - The 13 stripes on the flag are to remember the 13
colonies. - The reason the colors are red, white, and blue is
unknown.
- Red stands for bravery.
- White stands for liberty, purity, and innocence.
- Blue stands for justice and perseverance.

- A flag flown half-way down the pole is called
half mast. - The purpose of this is a sign of mourning or
sorrow.

or distress. - A flag flown near a monument is in tribute to
those we love.

- Flags have been flown at schools as early as 1812
in Massachusetts. - In the late 1800s, James Upham wanted children
to show love for their country. - He asked everyone to save their pennies to buy
flags for their schools. - The money was raised in one year.

- It was written in 1892.
- Francis Bellamy wrote it.
- It was written to show a sense of pride and love
for our country.

We put our hands on our hearts to show that we
mean what we say.
- pledge allegiance means you promise to be loyal
to this country. - republic is another name for our government it
enables use to vote for our leaders that means
we get to choose the leaders that will run the
country and make the laws.

divided. - liberty and justice for all means that we all
have the same freedoms and are all treated fairly.
