2What Is Phonemic Awareness?
- It is the strongest predictor of reading success
for your child. - It is the awareness of sounds in spoken language,
and recognizing the connections of these sounds,
with alphabet letters. - It is an awareness of alliteration, rhyme, and
segmentation.
3How Was The Program Run?
- Students received daily instruction from November
to May. - One letter sound was introduced to the students
each week.
4- There were large group activities (whole class).
- And
- Small group activities.
5- A phonemic awareness pre-test was given to
students in October. - A post-test was given to students in May, at the
end of the program. -
6Large Group Activities
- Mrs. Pointon ran the large group activities in
her classroom. - Those activities included

7Dear Boys And Girls, My friend Rory rides a
really red a bike. He races up and down the
road, making an outrageous racket! Rory is a red
rabbit. Have you seen him race around on the
road? Look at my rocket, ram, rake,

8Sound Bags
- A sound bag was sent home at the beginning of
each week. - After filling the bag with pictures objects
that begin with the letter sound, the students
shared their sound bag with an adult at school,
every Friday.
9Finger Cue
- Each sound has a finger cue to prompt the
students.
10Sound Puppet
- Each alphabet letter has a puppet character.
11Small Group Activities
- Different small group activities were run by
- - Mrs. Colina, who taught alliteration,

- -Ms. Routledge, who taught a review lesson
where students made their own letter sound books. -

- Words beginning with the same sound.

peppers.
13Alliteration Activities
- Students were exposed to letter sounds through
books, poems, and rhymes.
14- Sounds were demonstrated to the students, using
mirrors, a Mouthy Mouth puppet, and finger
cues.
15- Children pulled objects out of a bag, that all
began with the same target sound.
16- Games
- My secret word is an animal. Its name starts
with the /d/ sound, and it barks. What is my
secret word?
- Simon says, if my word starts with the /t/

- Find the picture beginning with the /m/ sound
