Framework for Buddy Reader Guidelines
  • Create a supportive, safe environment. The
student should know that making mistakes is all
right, and that you are there to help, not to
    judge.
  • Try to keep your schedule. Students and teachers
are expecting you. If you cant make it, please
call the teacher the day before or email her/him.
  • Be a Learning Partner. Take turns reading
portions of the selections. By doing this, you
will show the student that you are in this
    together.
  • Be patient. Beginners need time to figure out
new skills. Do not be too quick to correct a
mistake. Give the student a chance to discover
    first.

5
Framework for Buddy Reader Guidelines continued
  • Be friendly and warm, but firm. You must be in
    charge and follow school rules.
  • Feel free to reward hard work and success with
praise. Be positive at all times.
  • Do not ask the students what he/she would like to
do give him/her choices about the activities you
    have planned.
  • Be relaxed and dont worry about making mistakes.
  • Seek help from the classroom teacher and/or
Reading Coordinator when you have questions or
    problems.

6
Supported Reading Strategies
  • How to Help Students During Reading
  • SOUNDING OUT The tutor points to the beginning
letter (s) or combination of letters and asks,
How does this word begin? Get your mouth
ready for the first sound (s). Examples chug,
    street, whisper
  • CHUNKING The tutor assists the students in
finding the smaller words within the unknown
    word. Example
  • forgetful

7
Supported Reading Strategies continued
  • MAKING SENSE The tutor directs the students in
going back and rereading the sentence, skipping
the unknown word and asking, What word would
    make sense here?
  • USING PICTURES/CONTEXT CLUES The tutor uses the
pictures/context clues and asks, What do you
think the word might be? or What do you see?
  • READING SMOOTHLY The tutor, after several
attempts, will assist the students by telling
them the unknown word. The tutor will direct the
students to go back and reread the sentences.
