Alternative Fuels for Future Road Vehicles
  • In 10 to 20 years time, there
will be a drastic change in how automobiles are
going to work. Todays cars are very good we
are able to get quite a great amount of power out
of an ever decreasing amount of fuel. Yet, today
cars have two major flaws they run on an
exhaustible fuel, namely refined petroleum, and
they are not ecologically clean. Refined
petroleum, in the form of either gasoline or
diesel, is a hydrocarbon. Hydrocarbons burn
easily and react with oxygen. The result of
combustion is large amounts of heat, as well as
water, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and
nitrogen oxide. These last three are pollutants,
who cause global warming, depletion of the ozone
layer, and urban smog. Even though fuel economy
has increased in cars, more fuel is being
consumed because of an ever growing number of
vehicles on the road. It is because of these
flaws with the traditional internal combustion
engine that research is being made in the field
of alternative fuels. From non-exhaustible power
sources, to zero emission vehicles, the goal is
to develop a type of renewable fuel that doesnt
pollute the environment. With estimates that the
world oil supply is going to be used up in the
very near future, research is on its way to
finding a solution. The automotive industry has
already developed many alternatives to petroleum
based fuels. The links below are some of the
    most likely alternative fuels.
