Authorship
  • It is believed that Matthew the Tax Collector (Mt
    99-13), one of Jesus disciples, wrote the
    gospel.
  • Irenaeus, Origin Eusebius identify Matthew as
    the author based on earlier sources.
  • Technically the book is anonymous there is no
    compelling reason to reject the testimony of the
    early church.

Language Date
  • All existent copies are in Koine Greek.
  • Some hold that it was originally written in
    Hebrew, or possibly Aramaic, due to the testimony
    of some Church Fathers.
  • Written prior to the fall of Jerusalem in 70 A.D.
  • Early Church Fathers indicate that Matthew was
    written prior to the dispersion of the apostles
    in 42 AD.
