Title: Matthew 13 and AD70
1Matthew 13 and AD70
2Matthew 13
In the text to follow passages particularly
related to AD70 fulfillment of the end-of-the-age
are highlighted
3MATTHEW 13 The Parable of the Sower (Mark
419 Luke 848 ) 1 On that day Jesus went out
of the house and was sitting by the sea. 2 Such
large crowds gathered around him that he got into
a boat and sat down, while the whole crowd stood
on the shore. 3 Then he told them many things in
parables, saying, Consider the sower who went
out to sow. 4 As he sowed, some seed fell along
the path, and the birds came and devoured them. 5
Other seed fell on rocky ground where it didnt
have much soil, and it grew up quickly since the
soil wasnt deep. 6 But when the sun came up, it
was scorched, and since it had no root, it
withered away. 7 Other seed fell among thorns,
and the thorns came up and choked it. 8 Still
other seed fell on good ground and produced
fruit some a hundred, some sixty, and some
thirty times what was sown. 9 Let anyone who has
ears listen. The Purpose of Parables (Mark
41012 Luke 89, 10 ) 10 And the disciples came
and said to Him, Why do You speak to them in
parables? 11 He answered and said to them,
Because it has been given to you to know the
mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them
it has not been given. 12 For whoever has, to him
more will be given, and he will have abundance
but whoever does not have, even what he has will
be taken away from him. 13 Therefore I speak to
them in parables, because seeing they do not see,
and hearing they do not hear, nor do they
understand. 14 And in them the prophecy of Isaiah
is fulfilled, which says
4??Hearing you will hear and shall not
understand, ??And seeing you will see and not
perceive 15 ??For the hearts of this people have
grown dull. ??Their ears are hard of
hearing, ??And their eyes they have
closed, ??Lest they should see with their eyes
and hear with their ears, ??Lest they should
understand with their hearts and turn, ??So that
I should heal them.
Isaiah 69, 10 ?16 But blessed are your eyes for
they see, and your ears for they hear 17 for
assuredly, I say to you that many prophets and
righteous men desired to see what you see, and
did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and
did not hear The Parable of the Sower
Explained (Mark 41320 Luke 81115 ) 18
Therefore hear the parable of the sower 19 When
anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does
not understand it, then the wicked one comes and
snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is
he who received seed by the wayside. 20 But he
who received the seed on stony places, this is he
who hears the word and immediately receives it
with joy 21 yet he has no root in himself, but
endures only for a while. For when tribulation or
persecution arises because of the word,
immediately he stumbles. 22 Now he who received
seed among the thorns is he who hears the word,
and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness
of riches choke the word, and he becomes
unfruitful. 23 But he who received seed on the
good ground is he who hears the word and
understands it, who indeed bears fruit and
produces some a hundredfold, some sixty, some
thirty.
5The Parable of the Harvest (Wheat and the
Weeds) 24 Another parable He put forth to them,
saying The kingdom of heaven is like a man who
sowed good seed in his field 25 but while men
slept, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the
wheat and went his way. 26 But when the grain had
sprouted and produced a crop, then the weeds also
appeared. 27 So the servants of the owner came
and said to him, Sir, did you not sow good seed
in your field? How then does it have weeds? 28
He said to them, An enemy has done this. The
servants said to him, Do you want us then to go
and gather them up? 29 But he said, No, lest
while you gather up the weeds you also uproot the
wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until
the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will
say to the reapers, First gather together the
weeds and bind them in bundles to burn them, but
gather the wheat into my barn. The Parable
of the Mustard Seed (Mark 43032 Luke 1318, 19
) 31 Another parable He put forth to them,
saying The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard
seed, which a man took and sowed in his field, 32
which indeed is the least of all the seeds but
when it is grown it is greater than the garden
plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of
the air come and nest in its branches. The
Parable of the Leaven (Luke 1320, 21 ) 33
Another parable He spoke to them The kingdom of
heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed
with three measures of flour until all the dough
had risen.
6Prophecy and the Parables 34 All these things
Jesus spoke to the multitude in parables and
without a parable He did not speak to
them, 35 that it might be fulfilled which was
spoken by the prophet Isaiah, saying ???I will
open My mouth in parables ??I will utter things
kept secret from the foundation of the
world. The Parable of the Harvest
Explained 36 Then Jesus sent the multitude away
and went into the house. And His disciples came
to Him, saying, Explain to us the parable of the
weeds of the field. 37 He answered and said to
them He who sows the good seed is the Son of
Man. 38 The field is the world, the good seeds
are the sons of the kingdom, but the weeds are
the sons of the wicked one. 39 The enemy who
sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end
of the age, and the reapers are the
angels. 40 Therefore as the weeds are gathered
and burned in the fire, so it will be at The End
Of This Age. 41 The Son of Man will send out His
angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom
all things that offend, and those who practice
lawlessness, 42 and will cast them into the
furnace of fire. There will be wailing and
gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will
shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their
Father. He who has ears to hear, let him
hear! The Parable of the Hidden Treasure 44
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure
hidden in a field, which a man found and hid and
for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has
and buys that field. The Parable of the Pearl of
Great Price 45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is
like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, 46 who,
when he had found one pearl of great price, went
and sold all that he had and bought it.
7The Parable of the Net 47 Again, the kingdom of
heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea
and gathered fish of every kind. 48 When it was
full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted
the good into containers but threw away the bad.
49 So it will be at the end of the age. The
angels will come out and separate the evil from
the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery
furnace. In that place there will be weeping and
gnashing of teeth. 51 Jesus said to them, Have
you understood all these things? They said to
Him, Yes, Lord. 52 Then He said to them,
Therefore every scribe instructed concerning the
kingdom of heaven is like a householder who
brings out of his treasure things new and
old. Jesus Rejected at Nazareth (Mark 616
Luke 41630 ) 53 Now it came to pass, when Jesus
had finished these parables, that He departed
from there. 54 When He had come to His own
country, He taught them in their synagogue, so
that they were astonished and said, Where did
this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works?
55 Is this not the carpenters son? Is not His
mother called Mary? And His brothers James,
Joses, Simon, and Judas? 56 And His sisters, are
they not all with us? Where then did this Man get
all these things? 57 So they were offended at
Him. But Jesus said to them, A prophet is not
without honor except in his own country and in
his own house. 58 Now He did not do many mighty
works there because of their unbelief.

9Part IMatthew 13andJesuss Useof Parables
10Why speak in parables?
In the following slides verse numbers without
book reference will refer to Matthew 13.
- 10 The disciples came to Jesus and asked,
- Why do you speak to the people in parables?
11Jesus explains
- 11 The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of
heaven has been given to you, but not to them - 13 This is why I speak to them in parables
Though seeing, they do not see though hearing,
they do not hear or understand.
Question Who is you? and who is them/they?
Mark 410-11 But when He was alone, those around
Him with the twelve asked Him about the parable.
And He said to them, To you it has been given to
know the mystery of the kingdom of God but to
those who are outside, all things come in
parables.
12- 14 In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah
- You will be ever hearing but never
understanding - you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.
- For this peoples heart has become calloused
- they hardly hear with their ears,
- and they have closed their eyes.
- Otherwise, they might see with their eyes,
- hear with their ears, understand with their
- hearts and turn, and I would heal them. (Is
69,10)
Question What is the historical context of
Isaiah 6? Question What would Jesus mean by
fulfilled?
13The historical context of Isaiah 6 apostasy and
judgment
- Apostasy
- Israel had apostatized. Israel, and specifically
the ten northern tribes, had committed spiritual
adultery (Hosea 2), and Yahweh was sending
Isaiah the Prophet to Israel to call them to
repentance, understanding and knowing they were
not going to repent. - But he called on Isaiah to go and to preach to
them nonetheless. In fact, Isaiah said, Well,
Lord, if they're not going to listen, how long
should I go? How long should I preach? And the
Lord said, until the cities lie desolate. (Is
611) - Judgment is coming
- The Day of the Lord is coming a cruel day, with
wrath and fierce anger to make the land desolate
and destroy the sinners within it. (Is 139)
14Fulfillment of Law and Prophets
15 But blessed are your eyes for they see and
your ears for they hear, for assuredly I say to
you that many prophets and righteous men desired
to see what you see and did not see it, and to
hear what you hear and did not hear it.
- Luke 1616-17 The Law and the Prophets were
proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good
news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and
everyone is forcing their way into it.
Conclusion The time had arrived for the
fulfillment of the Old Covenant promises made to
Israel
15Fulfillment Kingdom is at hand
Matthew 1627-28 27 For the Son of Man is going
to come with his angels in the glory of his
Father, and then he will reward each according to
what he has done. 28 Truly I tell you, there are
some standing here who will not taste death until
they see the Son of Man coming in his
kingdom. Mark 114-15 14Jesus came to Galilee,
preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15
and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the
kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in
the gospel. Luke 2120-22 20 But when you see
Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that
its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are
in Judea flee to the mountains, let those who are
in the midst of her depart, and let not those who
are in the country enter her. 22 For these are
the days of vengeance, that all things which are
written may be fulfilled.
Conclusion All prophecy fulfilled within 40
years, i.e., AD70.

17End-of-the-Age Harvest
Parable of the Harvest (Wheat and Weeds) Mt
1324-30 24 Another parable He put forth to them,
saying The kingdom of heaven is like a man who
sowed good seed in his field 25 but while men
slept, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the
wheat and went his way.
18Jesus Explains the Parable of the Harvest 36 Then
Jesus sent the multitude away and went into the
house. And His disciples came to Him, saying,
Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the
field. 37 He answered and said to them He who
sows the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The
field is the world, the good seeds are the sons
of the kingdom, but the weeds are the sons of the
wicked one. 39 The enemy who sowed them is the
devil, the harvest is the end of this age, and
the reapers are the angels. 40 Therefore as the
weeds are gathered and burned in the fire, so it
will be at the end of this age. 41 The Son of Man
will send out His angels, and they will gather
out of His kingdom all things that offend, and
those who practice lawlessness, 42 and will cast
them into the furnace of fire. There will be
wailing and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the
righteous will shine forth as the sun in the
kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear,
let him hear!
19Matthew 13 harvesting harmonizes with Matthew
37,10,12 - 7 But when John saw many of the
Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he
said to them, Brood of vipers! Who warned you to
flee from the wrath to come?... 10 And even now
the ax is laid to the root of the trees.
Therefore, every tree which does not bear good
fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire12 He
who is coming after me i.e., Jesus His
winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will
thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and
gather His wheat into the barn but He will burn
up the chaff with unquenchable fire. Revelation
1414-16 - 14 Then I looked, and behold, a white
cloud, and on the cloud sat One like the Son of
Man, having on His head a golden crown, and in
His hand a sharp sickle. 15 And another angel
came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice
to Him who sat on the cloud, Thrust in Your
sickle and reap, for the time has come for You to
reap, for the harvest of the earth is ripe. 16
So He who sat on the cloud thrust in His sickle
on the earth, and the earth was reaped. When?
Revelation 11 - things which must shortly take
place.
20Matthew 13 and Matthew 24 (Olivet
Discourse) Matthew 13 end-of-the-age links
with Matthew 241-3,33-35 - 1 Then Jesus went
out and departed from the temple, and His
disciples came up to show Him the buildings of
the temple. 2 And Jesus said to them, Do you not
see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you,
not one stone shall be left here upon another,
that shall not be thrown down. 3 Now as He sat
on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him
privately, saying, Tell us, when will these
things be? And what will be the sign of Your
coming, and of the end of the age?Jesus gives
signs33 So you also, when you see all these
things, know that it is nearat the doors!
34Assuredly, I say to you, THIS GENERATION WILL
BY NO MEANS PASS AWAY TILL ALL THESE THINGS TAKE
PLACE. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My
words will by no means pass away.
2141 The Son of Man will send out His angels, and
they will gather out of His kingdom all things
that offend, and those who practice
lawless-ness, 42 and will cast them into the
furnace of fire. There will be wailing and
gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 2431 - And He will send His angels with
a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather
together His elect from the four winds, from one
end of heaven to the other. When? v34 - this
generation.
22Matthew 13 and Daniel 12
23Daniel 12 -The End Times 1 At that time...there
will be a time of distress such as has not
happened from the beginning of nations until
then. But at that time your peopleeveryone whose
name is found written in the bookwill be
delivered. 2 Multitudes who sleep in the dust of
the earth will awake some to everlasting life,
others to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 Those
who are wise will shine like the brightness of
the heavens, and those who lead many to
righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.
4 But you, Daniel, roll up and seal the words of
the scroll until the time of the end. Many will
go here and there to increase knowledge. 5 Then
I, Daniel, looked, and there before me stood two
others...6 One of them said...How long will it
be before these astonishing things are
fulfilled? 7 The man clothed in linen...I heard
him swear by him who lives forever, saying, It
will be for a time, times and half a time (3 ½
years). When the power of the holy people has
been finally broken, all these things will be
completed. 8 ...I asked, My lord, what will the
outcome of all this be? 9 He replied, Go your
way, Daniel, because the words are rolled up and
sealed until the time of the end. 10 Many will be
purified, made spotless and refined, but the
wicked will continue to be wicked. None of the
wicked will understand, but those who are wise
will understand. 11 From the time that the daily
sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that
causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290
days. 12 Blessed is the one who waits for and
reaches the end of the 1,335 days.13 As for you,
go your way till the end. You will rest, and then
at the end of the days you will rise to receive
your allotted inheritance.
24Matthew 13 Jesus draws on Daniel 12
Apocalypse 43 Then the righteous will shine
forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father.
He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
Daniel 121,3 - And there shall be a time of
trouble, such as never was since there was a
nation, ??even to that time. Those who are wise
shall shine ??like the brightness of the
firmament, ??and those who turn many to
righteousness ??like the stars forever and ever.
25Daniel 12 - When? Daniel 124,6-7 - But you,
Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book
until the time of the endHow long shall the
fulfillment of these wonders be?... when the
power of the holy people has been completely
shattered, all these things shall be finished.
Question What is/was the power of the holy
people? Question When is/was the power
broken? Question What are all these things?
26Daniel 122 - And many of those who sleep in the
dust of the earth shall awake, ??Some to
everlasting life, ??Some to shame and everlasting
contempt. Question To what does v.2 speak?
1 Corinthians 1520-24 - 20 But now Christ is
risen from the dead and has become the
firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21
For since by man came death, by Man also came the
resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all
die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.
23 But each one in his own order Christ the
firstfruits, afterward those who are Christs at
His coming. 24 Then comes the end, when He
delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He
puts an end to all rule and all authority and
power.
27Time of Trouble (Tribulation) Daniel 121 - And
there shall be a time of trouble, such as never
was since there was a nation, ??even to that
time. Matthew 2415,16,21 15 Therefore when you
see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by
Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place
(whoever reads, let him understand), 16 then let
those who are in Judea flee to the mountains21
For then there will be great tribulation, such as
has not been since the beginning of the world
until this time, no, nor ever shall be.
28Matthew 13, Revelation, and Martyr Vindication
29Matthew 13 and Revelation 14 39 the harvest is
the end of this age, and the reapers are the
angels. 40 Therefore as the weeds are gathered
and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end
of this age. 41 The Son of Man will send out His
angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom
all things that offend, and those who practice
lawlessness, 42 and will cast them into the
furnace of fire. There will be wailing and
gnashing of teeth.
Revelation 1415-16,19-20 - 15 And another angel
came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice
to Him who sat on the cloud, Thrust in Your
sickle and reap, for the time has come for You to
reap, for the harvest of the earth is ripe. 16
So He who sat on the cloud thrust in His sickle
on the earth, and the earth was reaped19 So the
angel thrust his sickle into the earth and
gathered the vine of the earth, and threw it into
the great winepress of the wrath of God. 20 And
the winepress was trampled outside the city, and
blood came out of the winepress, up to the
horses bridles
30Matthew 23 and Martyr Vindication Mt
2329,31,35-36 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the
prophets and decorate the monuments of the
righteous Therefore, I send you prophets and
wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill
and crucify, and some you will flog in your
synagogues and persecute from town to town, so
that on you may come all the righteous blood shed
on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the
blood of Zechariah, the son of BarachiahTruly, I
say to you, all these things will come upon this
generation.
31Revelation and the Guilt of Babylon Rev 182, 10,

the great city, be thrown down with violence and
will be found no more. Rev 118 Their bodies
will lie in the public square of the great

18 21,24 Then a mighty angel picked up a boulder
the size of a large millstone and threw it into
the sea and said With such violence the great
city of Babylon will be thrown down, never to be
found again24 In her was found the blood of
prophets and of Gods holy people, of all who
have been slaughtered on the earth.
Question Who is this Babylon?
32Luke 18 and Martyr Vindication Luke186-8 6 And
the Lord said, Listen to what the unrighteous
judge said 7 now, will God not bring about
justice for His elect who cry out to Him day and
night, and will He delay long for them? 8 I tell
you that He will bring about justice for them
quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will
He find faith on the earth?
Question When will the martyrs be vindicated?
33AD 70 and the End of the Mosaic Covenant Era
34- What happened in AD70?
- The siege of Jerusalem of 70 CE was the decisive
event of the First JewishRoman War (6673 CE),
in which the Roman army led by future emperor
Titus besieged Jerusalem, the center of Jewish
rebel resistance in the Roman province of Judaea.
Following a five-month siege, the Romans
destroyed the city and burned the Jewish Temple
to the ground, putting an end to any practice of
the Old Covenant Mosaic observance (which had
become largely corrupted). According to Josephus,
a contemporary historian and the main source for
the war, the city was internally ravaged by
murder, famine and cannibalism. Many followers of
Jesus of Nazareth had fled the city and survived
the city's destruction. They spread his teachings
across the Roman Empire, giving rise to the new
religion of Christianity.
