Multiple Sclerosis Cheri L Roy, BSN-PhD Year 2
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is the most common
demyelinating disease of CNS. There are over
400,000 people in the U.S. who suffer from MS and
over 2 million world wide. Predominately seen in
Caucasians, onset is typically seen between 20-
40years but the severity of disease is not age
dependant. While the symptoms and clinical
course of MS is unpredictable, patterns
    prevailing symptoms exist.
  • Studies indicate 50-75 of individuals with MS
develop some degree of cognitive dysfunction.
    Impairment of memory, abstract reasoning
learning ability may occur very early on (within
    1-5yrs).
  • Domains most often affected are attention, memory
and information processing speed. Language and
    intellectual function typically preserved.
Volume of physical symptoms is not equal to the
    volume of cognitive symptoms
