  • -Born the eighth of nine children to Sicilian
    immigrants,
  • -Fathers name was Giuseppe and he was a
    fisherman
  • -Mothers name was Rosalia
  • Family moved from Martinez, California to San
    Francisco, California when he was 1,
  • -At the age of 18 while playing in the Pacific
    Coast League with his older brother Vince, Joe
    recorded a PCL record 61 game hitting streak from
    May 28th-July 25th, 1933. Baseball never got
    into his blood until he ran off that 61 game
    hitting streak
  • -In 1934, his career almost ended. Going to his
    sister's house for dinner, he tore the ligaments
    in his left knee while stepping out of a jitney.
