The Founder of the KKK

• Nathan Forrest was born in Chapel Hill,
  Tennessee, on 13th of July, 1821 to a poor
  family. Nathan enlisted into the Confederate Army
  on the outbreak of the American Civil War.
• He was appointed a brigadier general by 21st
  July, 1862. In April, 1864, Forrest and his men
  captured Fort Pillow in Jackson, Tennessee.
• Fort Pillow contained 262 African American and
  295 white soldiers. All the soldiers were killed
  after they surrendered.
• After the war it is believed that Forrest helped
  establish the Ku Klux Klan and became the first
  grand wizard in May 1867. Nathan died 11 years
  later.

The Objectives of the KKK

• The KKK tortured and killed Blacks and
  sympathetic Whites. They also killed immigrants
  because they blamed them for the election of the
  Radical Republicans.
• One of the main objectives of the KKK is to keep
  blacks and other minorities form being able to
  vote. The KKK also wanted to bring back the
  government that the confederates fought for.
• The KKK took to violence to take out trade
  unions, successful minorities, and anyone who
  opposed them.

The First Klan-Creation

• Created at the end of the Civil War.
• Spread through almost every southern state
  launching a "reign of terror" on Republicans both
  black and white.
• A document called the prescript by George
  Gordon. The prescript included the goals of the
  clan and a list of questions that the applicants
  had to answer.
• When Nathan Forrest was told of the clan he said,
  "That's a good thing that's a damn good thing.
  We can use that to keep the n1_at__at_ in their
  place.
• Its popularity came from its reputation and that
  was greatly increased by the costumes they wore.

The First Klan-Activities

• The Klan used violence and intimidation to
  control and regulate the lives of colored people.
  They also burn crosses and lynched those who
  oppose their cause.
• In 1896 Gordon made a proclamation that stated
  the issues that surrounded the Klans violent
  activities. Gordon said that the Klan was a
  peaceful organization just that people thought
  the costume was convenient to carry out illegal
  activities.

The First Klan-Decline

• The first Klan was never centrally organized. It
  had no membership rosters, no newspapers, no
  spokesmen, no chapters, no local officers, no
  state or national officials.
• Gov. William Holden of North Carolina attempted
  to use the state militia against the Klan and was
  removed from office.
• The first Klan ended with the Colfax massacre.
  The massacre began when colored people fought
  against the Klan and its allies in the White
  League.

The Second Klan-Creation

• Three things sparked the rise of the second Klan.
  The first thing is the making of a motion picture
  called THE RISE OF A NATION.
