  • Key ? How did the Republican Party try to
    advance civil rights for African Americans?
  • 1868 Ulysses S. Grant won the
    presidency.(Republican)
  • Electoral votes votes in the Electoral College,
    which elects the president and vice president.
  • Freedmen voted him in.

The Fifteenth Amendment
  • Amendment formal change to the constitution.
  • Fifteenth amendment- stated that citizens could
    not be stopped from voting on account of race,
    color, or previous condition of servitude.(did
    not apply to women or Native Americans)

  • Ku Klux Klan continued terrorizing African
    Americans in the South.
  • Grant asked Congress to pass tough law against
    the Klan.
  • Federal marshals then arrested thousand of
    Klansmen and attacks declined.

Reconstruction Weakens
  • Key ?- How did Reconstruction lose its strength?
  • Grant choose army friends and wifes relatives in
    government positions.
  • Scandals of tax evasion bribery.
  • Some Republicans broke away and formed the new
    Liberal Republican Party. Less effective in
    imposing tough Reconstruction policies on the

The Panic of 1873
  • Eastern banks made some bad loans and ran out of
    money, which caused the Panic of 1873. Banks
    closed across the land.
  • Stock Market place where shares of ownership in
    companies are bought and sold. It collapsed.
  • Brought on Depression a time of low business
    activity and high unemployment. Lasted 5 years.
  • Nation lost interest in the South and blamed
    Republicans for the crisis.

Civil Rights Reversals
  • Supreme Court began reversing some of the Civil
    Rights progress.
  • U.S. v. Cruikshank federal government could not
    punish individuals who violated the civil rights
    of African Americans only states could. (1876)
  • U.S. v. Reese ruled in favor of white
    Southerners who barred African Americans from
    voting. 15th amendment didnt mean they could use
    other reasons from keeping African American to
    vote.

Reconstruction Ends

  • Compromise a settlement in which both parties
    gave up somethings they wanted.
  • Compromise of 1877 Rutherford B. Hayes became
    president, but Republicans had to give up a lot.

  • African Americans legal situation changed.
  • Slavery was outlawed.
  • Federal government did not enforce 14th 15th
    amendment.
  • African Americans still faced widespread violence
    and prejudice.
  • Lack of land ownership and economic opportunity
    kept African American in poverty.
