• Corn Ethanol
• An alcohol fuel derived from the fermentation of
  corn kernels
• An alternative renewable fuel
• US Ethanol production
• Illinois leads in introduction and production
• At most only 3 independence from foreign oil

How Its made

• Two ways of production
• Wet milling
• Steeping
• Fractionate
• Liquefaction
• Saccharification
• Fermentation
• Distillation and recovery
• Dry grinding
• Same steps except without the steeping

Advantages

• Its renewable
• We can grow it here, no foreign dependence
• Burning ethanol produces less pollutants
• benzene and butadiene as well as others
• Burns clean with less soot
• burn more completely then gas
• When dissolved in water has a neutral PH
• Boosts economy
• More jobs for Americans

Advantages continued

• Carbon dioxide produced during the production of
  corn ethanol
• CO2 captured and used to carbonate soft drinks
• Excess used for corn to complete photosynthesis

Disadvantages

• Takes as much energy to produce as it yields
• One GL. of Ethanol equals .65 GL of gas
• Only the Kernel is used
• the stalk and husks are discarded
• Raises food prices
• Increases certain pollutants
• formaldehyde and acetaldehyde
• Increased uses of pesticides and fertilizers
• These chemicals run off and pollute the water

Disadvantages continued

• Corn ravishes the soil more then most plants
• It erodes the soil 18 times faster then it
  replenishes it.
• There are starving people, and we are using food
  as fuel
