The Logic
  • Students are again interested in public service,
    and in the environment
  • Those of us who lived through the 1970s are, too
  • An Inconvenient Truth has caught peoples
    attention
  • The consumer society is responding
  • Interesting partnerships are forming
  • Academia, especially a research-extensive
university, provides a very fertile soil (and
    renewable energy!)

3
The Purposes
  • The Drexel Committee for Sustainability is a task
force of students, faculty and staff working in
six areas to review and evaluate all aspects of
operations, buildings and student life on campus,
with the objective of developing a five-year plan
to make Drexel a more environmentally-friendly
    community.
  • Educating citizens.

peer and stretch colleges and universities
    doing?

Buses, Bikes, Cars, Trains and FeetWhat is
Drexel Doing to Promote Green Locomotion?
  • Youve ridden in the Drexel buses and vans,
youve seen the bike racks, you know parkings
tough, theres always the subway. Are we using
biodiesel or considering all hybrid (or better)
cars? Does it incentivize greener modes of
transit or burden others? Should it? Are there
better ways for Drexel to move its people around?
Should Drexel play a larger role in supporting
    public transportation?
  • Tomorrow, 1200 Noon, Mitchell
    Auditorium, Bossone

Phase I InvestigationCall for Quarterly
Reports
  • E-mailed to all Deans/Directors SVPs/VPs
  • The objective is to create a complete listing, as
much as possible an inventory of all things
environmental/sustainable that are going on at
Drexel. I think we will all be surprised and
proud of what we are already doing.
  • Note to Deans The academic, research and
service efforts that you and your colleagues are
making are obviously key pieces of this,
attesting to the range of our involvement.

23
Initiatives
  • Trayless Tuesdays during April saved 480
gallons of water and over 200 pounds of food
    waste each day
  • Reduced flow showers in the DAC, since
mid-February were down 6 mcf in the DAC at a
cost of /-45/mcf, or 270.  The investment was
4180.  Annualized, the savings should track to
    2340, for less than a two-year payback.

24
Water Consumption in the DAC
25
The Objective
  • Wouldnt it be terrific if students leaving
Drexel would take an appreciation for our
environment with them, to their families, their
    homes, their jobs.
  • Five years from now, when we are looking back on
the five-year plan we created, be proud not only
of what Drexel has achieved, but what Drexels
alumni have achieved, taking this knowledge with
    them.

26
The Charge
  • The bottom line this is not about The
University. It is about us. It is about you.
  • How can we take less from resources that cannot
be renewed? How can we use less, and cause less
damage? How can we together create a more
    sustainable environment?

27
