university, provides a very fertile soil (and
renewable energy!)

six areas to review and evaluate all aspects of
operations, buildings and student life on campus,
with the objective of developing a five-year plan
to make Drexel a more environmentally-friendly
community. - Educating citizens.

Drexel Doing to Promote Green Locomotion?
- Youve ridden in the Drexel buses and vans,
youve seen the bike racks, you know parkings
tough, theres always the subway. Are we using
biodiesel or considering all hybrid (or better)
cars? Does it incentivize greener modes of
transit or burden others? Should it? Are there
better ways for Drexel to move its people around?
Should Drexel play a larger role in supporting
public transportation? -
- Tomorrow, 1200 Noon, Mitchell
Auditorium, Bossone
10Community Presentations

questions, good ideas - All powerpoints and podcasts on the Drexel Green
website - Well presented, and well received
11Phase I InvestigationCall for Quarterly
Reports
- E-mailed to all Deans/Directors SVPs/VPs
- The objective is to create a complete listing, as
much as possible an inventory of all things
environmental/sustainable that are going on at
Drexel. I think we will all be surprised and
proud of what we are already doing. - Note to Deans The academic, research and
service efforts that you and your colleagues are
making are obviously key pieces of this,
attesting to the range of our involvement. -

the Rush Building come from recycled paper. - - Quick Facts about energy conservation and other
green ideas to educate students, staff and
faculty will be emailed and posted throughout the

19One Administrative Departments Response
- Purchase recycled supplies when available
- Greater re-use of Interoffice envelopes
- Turn off lights in office(s) when not in use
- Turn off computers at the end of each day
- Return used toner cartridges to Office Depot to
be recycled - use ceramic mugs
- or reuse or recycle plastic cold beverage cups
- Staff members make use of recycling containers
for paper and for plastic/aluminum cans - Board of Trustees are now electronically notified
of committee and board meetings instead of
mailings - We are told that our shredded paper is recycled
- We have re-used boxes repeatedly and keep them
stored in the basement. We have used them for
when our office was relocated during renovations,
if we needed to box up files to be sent to the
basement for archiving, etc. - Documents and agreements have been updated using
track changes and shared electronically so that
we avoid printing unnecessarily. - Some staff members receive their telephone
messages electronically instead of receiving a
multitude of paper messages. - When we have replaced computers for staff
members, we have donated the older computers to
area schools, churches and organizations. - Appointment of Sustainability Coordinator
20One Vendors Response - Sodexho
- Travel Mugs that can be used for a 99-cent refill
at most locations - New one at a time Xpress napkin dispensers in
the resident dining center - 5-cent discount when you opt out of using a
plastic bag at Northside Market - Recycling cardboard at all dining locations

Bookmark Café - Catering brochures are now available on line to
reduce printing and paper usage - Low flow nozzles used in the dish room
- Zero trans fat oils
- Waste cooking oil is refined and used for
industrial lubricants and biofuels - Using new local produce company
21Phase I Achievements
- Dynamic Website and Wiki
- Presentations inspired Administrative Departments
to focus on these issues - Attention and enthusiasm with events around Earth
Day/Earth Week - More than 150 people participating in the
Committee - Procurement amended its mission statement
22- University Procurement supports Drexel
University's educational mission and
administrative needs in accordance with the
University's policies and procedures by assisting
faculty and staff in obtaining timely, high
quality products and services at low prices
utilizing good business practices, professional
ethics with green/sustainable values
23Initiatives
- Trayless Tuesdays during April saved 480
gallons of water and over 200 pounds of food
waste each day - Reduced flow showers in the DAC, since
mid-February were down 6 mcf in the DAC at a
cost of /-45/mcf, or 270. The investment was
4180. Annualized, the savings should track to
2340, for less than a two-year payback.
24Water Consumption in the DAC
25The Objective
- Wouldnt it be terrific if students leaving
Drexel would take an appreciation for our
environment with them, to their families, their
homes, their jobs. - Five years from now, when we are looking back on
the five-year plan we created, be proud not only
of what Drexel has achieved, but what Drexels
alumni have achieved, taking this knowledge with
them.
26The Charge
- The bottom line this is not about The
University. It is about us. It is about you. - How can we take less from resources that cannot
be renewed? How can we use less, and cause less
damage? How can we together create a more
sustainable environment?
