Title: Localization and Extended Services
1Localization and Extended Services
- NFAIS/NISO Linking Workshop
- February 24, 2002
- Miriam Blake
- Los Alamos National Laboratory
2Localization
- Local (library) control of what and where
- Requires
- Way to reroute resolution
- OpenURL
- Place to reroute to
- Local resolution server (link-server)
31. Source OpenURL enabled by Service Provider
Source 1
3. Metadata and context info are transported
OpenURL hook presented to user
Local Resolution Link Server (SFX, etc.)
- Other relevant services
- Appropriate copy (full text)
- (extended services)
4OpenURL Link Server
- A resolver which decodes the OpenURL and
redirects the link to the appropriate resource - In practice, a software suite and database that
allows appropriate and extended services to be
presented to the user
5Extended Services
- Lookup authors in other databases
- Check whether authors are cited
- Find author email address on web
Does library have print holdings of this journal?
Appropriate copy Full Text
If full-text not available, how about document
delivery?
6Show Relevant Services
- Library maintains control and decision making
- Rules database controls service parameters
- Thresholds
ISSN?
Article Date
Show Full-text link
Yes, ISSN exists
Date gt our EJ access
7Sources, Services Targets
- Source reference/citation you start with and
want to link from - Services list of objects you can retrieve based
on the source metadata - Targets where you will end up (full text
repository, database, website, etc.)
8Metadata and Extended Services
- How detailed is the metadata passed from the
source?
- Reference citation brief
- Gomes JF, Sotkov GM and Zimmerman AM 1999 Ann
Phys NY 274 289-362 - Abstract / Full citation detailed
- Includes all authors, title, subjects, abstract,
other tagged data fields, other numerical
identifiers (ISSN, CODEN, SICI, etc)
9Metadata on the OpenURL
- Metadata is transported implicitly by using
identifiers to FETCH metadata - OR
- Metadata is transported explicitly - by value
on the OpenURL - Supports 7 core genres
- Very simple metadata scheme
10Explicit Fetch
- Database is identified by sid
- Source hook contains record retrieval id
- OpenURL sees BASE-URL (user context)
Source 1 OpenURL Link

BASE-URL Link Server (SFX, etc.)
Services
11Implicit Fetch
- Database is identified by sid
- Source hook contains metadata
- OpenURL sees BASE-URL (user context)
Source 1 OpenURL Link

- Retrieval rules for source
- database (sid) are processed
- Metadata is processed to
- determine services
BASE-URL Link Server (SFX, etc.)
Services
12Metadata and Extended Services
- Metadata must be available for services to be
presented - External sources metadata can come from
CrossRef / publisher /etc. - Control over source means control over metadata
13A Wide World of Variations
- Metadata quality varies greatly
- Linking systems which currently rely on metadata
may be helped by use of DOI - Extended services will continue to use metadata
from one place or another - Quality and quantity both effect services
