OpenURL Link Server

• A resolver which decodes the OpenURL and
  redirects the link to the appropriate resource
• In practice, a software suite and database that
  allows appropriate and extended services to be
  presented to the user

• Find author email address on web

Metadata on the OpenURL

• Metadata is transported implicitly by using
  identifiers to FETCH metadata
• OR
• Metadata is transported explicitly - by value
  on the OpenURL
• Supports 7 core genres
• Very simple metadata scheme

A Wide World of Variations

• Metadata quality varies greatly
• Linking systems which currently rely on metadata
  may be helped by use of DOI
• Extended services will continue to use metadata
  from one place or another
• Quality and quantity both effect services
