What is the World Wide Web?

• Graphical interface to the Internet
• World wide network of computers
• a collection of Web pages
• Over 100 million users in over 150 countries
• No governing body - owned by everybody

• Began in March 1989
• 20 years after the Internet
• European physics researches
• Wanted to transfer information effectively

• 1996 7.7 of adults in US use WWW
• 2000 51 of U.S. households with access
• Future projections have 75 of worlds population
  with Web access

• Homepage - a location on the WWW that identifies
  an individual or organizations Web site
• Search Engine - an Internet site that allows you
  to search for Web pages by subject or keyword.
  Examples Altavista, Yahoo, WebCrawler, Google,
  AskJeeves
• Service Provider - a company that provides
  connections to the Internet

• Bookmarks - way to keep track of where you have

• Hypertext sends a request to open a URL
• Displays HTML documents
• FTP
• Gopher
• Telnet

What is HTML?

• HyperText Markup Language
• Document formatting language
• 7-bit ASCII files with formatting codes
• tags contain codes ltBgt bold text
• formats layout (text styles, titles, paragraphs,
  lists)
• creates hyperlinks (URLs)
